Wonder if you can help me out guys.

Have a problem with some noticeable vibrations and car wanting to pull to one side (Phase 2 GTi).

Car was pulling to the right quite a bit, so had tracking done when new tyres were fitted and wheels balanced a little while ago. But it still pulled after having this done.

My gearbox then decided to die, so I bought a good second hand box with a brand new clutch from somebody on here, plus two good looking driveshafts and brand new track rod ends.

Fitted it all with the help of a good friend (Rich on here) and obviously tracking was well off.

So I had tracking done again once all new parts fitted. Not forgetting that he asked who did the work for me, as they left one of the ball joint pinch bolts loose lol... I did the work! Embarrassing.

Anyway, initially I thought everything was sorted. But, when I get up to motorway speeds (70/80) I get a noticeable vibration through the steering wheel.

It can be really quite bad, much more noticeable when going uphill slightly and not so much when going downhill.

Have also noticed that when taking a left hander quite fast (twisties) it almost seems as though the front inside wheel wants to skip and lose traction, difficult to describe what I mean, but like it struggles to put the power down.

Also noticeable is that if I'm travelling at 70/80 on the motorway and the road goes slightly left, I obviously turn the wheel to the left but it almost seems as though I have to use strength to hold it, let go of the wheel and it really wants to shoot me over to the right.

When I come to stop at traffic lights, the wheel naturally goes to the right.

The vibration isn't noticeable at lower speeds but very noticeable at higher speeds and particularly uphill as I mentioned, plus I have that massive pull to the right.

Replaced a track rod and track rod ends and recently had new droplinks not long ago.

What else could cause these problems?

I think driveshafts possibly? However my friend did mention that we fitted new driveshafts when we did the gearbox. But my argument is that they are new (old) driveshafts, they looked to be in good condition, boots were ok and new bearing on one of the driveshafts, but I guess one or both could still be buggered? Or not?

Could it be P bushes or ball joints? Or engine/gearbox mounts? Driving me insane!

Appreciate any pointers Smile

Ovalled hub??

I'm expperiencing similar problems, but know that my left hub is fooked. So I'm hoping once that and my tracking is done it will all be sound.

Check the pinch bolts again on the ball joints. I had mine off as I was getting welding done to the floor so had the subframe off. Put it all back together. Everything was checked and double checked. Checked everything a couple hundred miles later and the pinch bolt had slackened

Would a knackered wheel bearing cause this problem guys?

You'll need to throw money at the car. Not on parts. Just stand near your car and throw loose change at it, I find this increases performance for a short period of time

I had trouble with my car vibration like you describe and having trouble putting the power down, but no pulling to any of the sides... I had my KW v2 mounted and lowered 60mm compared to the ride hight it was on the original ones (which may have sunken a bit over the years), which turned out to be too much as it killed my driveshafts (the short ones) twice.

I then mounted back the original springs and dampers and fitted "new" driveshafts, just to test and the problem has dissapeared.

The only thing left to test for me is to mount back the KW v2's and raise it up to maximum height, to see if that can work, though I never had trouble with any of my other cars being lowered to the max Smile
