Looking at engine options for my Xsara now I'm keeping it. It has a 1.8 alloy block 16v, I have a spare 1.8 16v head I'm going to port and gti6 cams inlet and exhaust manifolds.
I want to stay with the alloy block so would a 1.9 mi16 bottom end be any better? I'm not just thinking capacity wise but is it a different design? better in the long run type thing if I decide to turbo?
I take it my 1.8 head will fit? I have read that a ported 1.8 head is better than the GTi6 head as it has bigger valves?

Just looking for a few ideas and pointers really.

The design is night on identical to all intents, just lots of minor details here and there different.

An Mi will be old and tired, costly to make good.

The above whilst nice is not an option, so if you had to choose which would you go for? stick with the 1.8 which I have or buy an mi16 bottom end for £100?
Whats the difference in compression will the 1.9 be any better I guess is what I need to know...

mi is the same compression ratio as the 1.8.

So stick with what I've got then as the gains are minimal if anything.

I could well be wrong but from what I remember of the pistons you would have more valve clearance with an mi bottom end as they have larger cutouts.

That said even if I am right seeing as you are only planning to run stock rs cams you won't have an issue with either. The problem with mi's is the well known oil surge issue, there are many different theories on causes and cures but no real definitive answer. Mine has been in my 205 5000 miles with no issue at all but it was totally rebuilt. If you do go for one then you definitely need to be budgeting for a full rebuild as most are going to be f**ked these days.

its not oil surge purely, its oil starvation due to the amount of oil the rest of the engine uses, highlighted by oil surge.

indeed it will be pretty tired at £100.
