It's most likely coincidental but it sounds like your thermostat is stuck open. Yes

Yeah, I'd say thermostat too.

It's an 83°C thermostat so even accounting for gauge discrepancy you shouldn't see the coolant temperature below 80 on a warmed up engine.

Try another bleed of the system. Did you switch the heaters to full heat when you bled the system after fitting the rad? Also did you open all 3 bleed points?

You need to re-bleed it then. Yes

Start with the rad point, then once you've got all the air out from there move on to the thermostat point and then finally the matrix pipe point.

Whilst you're doing this make sure you've got the heaters on full as well. Thumbs up

Providing the thermostat isn't stuck open then yes, it should solve the problem. Thumbs up

This is not necessary and will not assist bleeding. There is no relationship between the setting of the heater temperature dial and the plumbing of the cooling system.

On some cars the heater temperature control does directly control coolant flow to the heater matrix but the 306 is not such a car.

On the 306 the heater matrix is plumbed in on an always-open circuit and the temperature control adjusts the path of the air through the heater box. The hotter the setting the greater the proportion of air that is channeled through the matrix.

No problem. Thumbs up

Cheers Rich for correcting that, I'd forgotten our coolant system operated in that way. Smile

A dodgy lambda sensor is usually attributed to low fuel economy. Changing the plugs won't be the cause. No

There isn't always coolant flowing out of the matrix bleed point at idle, I usually rev the car up manually to about 2000rpm and then when the coolant comes out bubble free I lock it off. Wink

As I asked in your other thread, what sort of a tap is it? Does it go away after a few minutes of running, or is it constantly there and gets louder and quicker with rising revs?

Common things for engine taps are:

Loose sparkplugs, valve damage (not good) or lazy tappets.

Yours could well be a case or lazy tappets IF the tap does indeed disappear after a few minutes of running and given the fact it has sat doing nothing for 2 years...

When you say the manual tensioner, do you mean the cambelt tensioner is heavily worn? Dunno
