Rebuilding a mates rallye engine at the moment after a HG failure. Never properly overheated but mixed oil and coolant and was pressurising coolant.
Got the head off this evening (ive done a few 6 engines now and worryingly, the head bolts didnt feel anywhere near tight enough) and it all looks ok. MLS gasket didnt have any obvious signs of damage but i know it only has to be the tiniest bit of damage.
Engine was rebuilt two years ago and this was pretty obvious. Bores had been honed and looked lovely except for number 4. There is a mark down the back of the bore and i cant work out what it is. The valve guides in the head on this cylinder also look burnt compared to the others which look perfect.
Any ideas what this could be? want to get an idea before we bolt it back together!

Looks like its gone on pot 4 as usual and steam cleaned the oil off that bore.

I would measure that bore, probably wont last that long till the rings go if it looks like that i'd imagine.

no idea what that could be, but I'd be inclined to think that bore is fudged.

Probably best to get it looked at/possibly honed. A lot of time and effort to put it back together and find it's not running right due to that. Wink

Well its all sorted now. The gasket had gone on number 4. It was just staining which cleaned off with a bit of perseverance. Im assuming it was coolant runnning down the bore after the engine was switched off.

More than likely, glad it's all up and running and sorted. Thumbs up

Oh its not running. Had a bit of an issue trying to get it all timed up but its done now. All built up and filled up. Just need to get a cat fitting kit as one of the bolts snapped when we dropped the manifold off the back so get that fitted and get that nervous first fire tomorrow!

I see, good luck with it then. I remember the days of that nervous first fire up, was always a relief when it burst into life and didn't make any strange noises. Yes LOL

It's alright. It's not my car. If it starts up and makes all sorts of horrendous noises and over heats, I'm off. My warranty is only valid till first startup! Laugh my ass off:

LOL

I usually tell my customers at work for a laugh that my warranty only lasts as long as it takes for me to get out the door! LOL

It's amazing how many people actually take that comment seriously though...Doh
