Just been told by my local garage that the alternator on the 6 is dead. As I've ripped out the air conditioning do I need a different alternator? Or is a straight swap ok?

The only reason I ask is ECP list two alternators for my registration, one with AC the other without.

Cheers Andrew

unless you have changed the engine mounting bracket and are using a non 306 2.0 16v rfv or rfs alternator it'll be the same alternator as before.

what difference do ECP state there is between ac and non ac? they fit the same so I can only think its the ampage.

The only difference that the description gives is the non AC one has a pulley diameter of 61mm and an ampage of 80. The AC one has a pulley diameter of 62mm and an ampage of 95. Both are LUCAS in brand which I guess isn't a bad make???

Changing it to a bigger output one will only make the alternator belt a tighter fit. I changed my original alternator to a 605 SV24 120A one, huge lump it was but fitted nicely. At least there won't be a problem with charging at any time Big grin Not like it needed it, I just had one around when the old one failed.

This is a question I wanted to ask. I want to fit the smallest alternator I can get away with, but obviously I don't want to run out of sparks, lights etc. worst case scenario is obviously fans on, wet race, lights, heated screen (front only) wipers full tilt) 3 fuel pumps running, lights blazing and whatever the ECU is using (a fair bit at 8,000 rpm I imagine).
I'm running a powervamp 25 battery which is pretty small, could I get away with a 90 amp alternator? Or even less?
