This is driving me insane! There's a knock and rattle coming from the back end whilst going over even the smallest of bumps, i've had it on and off the four poster more times than i dont know what and i cant find it! I've tightened every nut, bolt and screw i can see and it has aluminium subframe mounts(don't know if this is standard). I'm at a dead end as i cant understand how anything can be rattling, any suggestions?________________________________________ 'Keep The 6 Between The Sticks'Blaze Of Glory, 6 FTW |

My moneys on the bushes in the lower shock mount, they can click/knock when under load if worn. ________________________________________ 1999 Astor Grey GTi-6 OEM+ (now gone...)2004 Aegean Blue 206 GTi 180 (also gone...) 2006 Skoda Fabia vRS in Sprint Yellow honestly3k wrote: Do you wrestle for a living matt? Check your rear brake disc protectors. If they are corroded they can make it sound as if your car is about to disintegrate ________________________________________ Standard Black 6Black HBSC6 |

Also any play in arb bushes, shocks, calipers all transmit througn the solid mounts into the shell |

Cheers guys, I've looked at almost all of what everyone's saying. I have no spare wheel carrier or bolt/hook so that's ruled out, full s/s exhaust and it doesn't touch anywhere(I spent hours making sure of this as it was knocking under deceleration when I got the car), There's a little rattle from the rear pads but it isn't that I can hear.... May do the shock bushes for the fun of it ________________________________________ 'Keep The 6 Between The Sticks'Blaze Of Glory, 6 FTW |

Might be worth checking in the holes through the boot floor/box section where beam mounts are secured to car, make sure the washers are fitted Could be loose rattling around in the box section ________________________________________ Red GTB1756 powered Fabia VRS daily driver,LBSC Gti6 eater........Mac1 ZR R1 kit car build in progress. |

Solid rear mounts do not create a rattle from the rear of the car. They do however make any rattle that's present sound louder as there is no longer any rubber damping to absorb the noise. My guess is either as suggested shock bushes worn or beam bearings themselves worn. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

If it's under deceleration it could be engine/chassis mount related.________________________________________ R H Davey Welding Supplies. I sell new and used welding equipment in the Hampshire area. Nah it's not under acceleration or deceleration, in any case I have just fitted group N engine and gearbox mounts, and I've tightened every nut and bolt I can reach, what does the "passive" rear steering? Is the beam bearings a problem?________________________________________ 'Keep The 6 Between The Sticks'Blaze Of Glory, 6 FTW |

You haven't got passive rear steering, due to having solid mounts the orig mounts give the passive rear steer. Beam bearings are a problem now as the cars are old,is there any camber on either of the rear wheels? ________________________________________ Red GTB1756 powered Fabia VRS daily driver,LBSC Gti6 eater........Mac1 ZR R1 kit car build in progress. |

, That's strange as I thought I could feel lateral movement at the rear under heavy cornering.... There doesn't seem to be any camber on the rear, the beam bearings must be at fault, although I will check the disc protectors tomorrow, can the beam bearings being worn become dangerous... I.e. Is a unit going to fly off eventually? Typically when half way round a tight left-hander on the limit on a narrow country road in the small hours? Anyone have an opinion on which mounts are best, original or solid? I'd quite like a bit of rear steer.... ________________________________________ 'Keep The 6 Between The Sticks'Blaze Of Glory, 6 FTW |

It's all down to personal preference really when it comes to the rear mounts. Some prefer standard ones with the passive rear steer whilst others prefer the solid. I personally would never go back to standard ones, for me the solids make the car so predictable and handle much better. Each to their own really. As for worn beam bearings being dangerous, the fact that you haven't got any noticeable camber on the rear wheels suggests to me they're not critical as yet to be changed, but even so they don't really cause massive failures like bits flying off. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

Cheers Stan, I'm going to york on Monday and I suspect my clutch won't last the day at the strip so it will be straight back and on the four poster for a week or so, I'm thinking organic clutch, lightened flywheel, air con removed, one of those fandangly alloy lower pulleys and a general good going over! So I'll check all te back end out then and figure out what I want to do with the rear mounts! ________________________________________ 'Keep The 6 Between The Sticks'Blaze Of Glory, 6 FTW |

from what I understand from peoples comments and my understanding of the effect they have, Its seems to me that having them is one of those things that you need to have modifications else where in the suspension to get the best out of them?I.e Stiffing the back with a thicker arb/stiffer shocks? i may be wrong though ________________________________________ Ex- Phase 3 China GTi-6 T-Reg |

I'm not sure, I'm used to big RWD cars so I'm not adverse to a "loosening" of the rear, in fact; I quite enjoy it! I know a lot of people don't like rear unpradictability though, I suppose I'd just have to try 'em out and see what happens! I'm not doing them until I find out what all this noise is though, disc protectors are fine but there is a little camber at the rear; about two or three degrees I would estimate....I take it that's not supposed to be? How much for beam bearings, which ones and what are they like to fit anyone? Cheers for all the help and advice fellas ________________________________________ 'Keep The 6 Between The Sticks'Blaze Of Glory, 6 FTW |
