Hi, I'm just wondering if a buggered battery can still read 12.7 volts?
Reason I ask is I've just nipped to the shop in my mondeo deisel and after getting in the car to come back, it wouldn't start and the gauges went up and down (like gti6 does with flat battery) and the dash lights went all weird, none worked except airbag one, others would flicker on them off, interior lights off eg, remote central locking stopped working but could hear a relay flicking on and off.
I immediately thought battery so I walked home grabbed some tools, a multimeter and a brand new genuine ford battery I had given me last year and had saved for a emergency.
I Walked back to the car, arms killing from carrying this huge battery a mile and I tested the battery on the car, it was 12.7 volts, the same as the new one I have.
I thought I'd try removing battery lead ti see if it will reset a electrical fault if thats what's up, but after undoing the lead I thought f**k it just fit the battery, it's dark and I wanna get her home, so I fitted it and bingo, she chugs again.
I'm just wondering if it was the battery that's buggered and still showing 12.7 volts or if there is a fault and removing the power lead reset it and I should expect this to happen again sometime(probably miles from home or help)?
Thanks
Andy

I'd say a bad earth connection was the problem

It seemed fine up until now, started up as normal when i set off 5 mins before it wouldnt start and its not been slow to turn over or anything, and could sit with radio on engine off eg and restart after.
I wonder why it would just go like that, it's usually the winter when a battery fails on me.

both battery leads was well tight on the terminal though, and it's not been undone in at least 3 years

Could just have been corrosion on the battery post not making a great contact with terminal

I thought that but ford put so much grease around them for some reason when they serviced it that I think it could be down with the titanic and not get corrosion on them LOL

Yes a battery can be shagged and still show 12.7 volts. Hold the meter on as you crank the engine, bet it drops to nothing.

I have one of these jobbies which actually puts a load on the battery to test it properly, you'd be surprised how quickly voltage can drop when you suddenly draw 100A through it Yes

Either corrosion, and a circuit wasn't being made or the battery itself was knackered.

As Owain says, doing a "drop" test on a battery can be useful to determine whether or not it still has a useful amount of life left in it. Yes

I've just checked the suspected dud battery and it's now dropped to 10.5 volts, so I think I can safely say it was the battery, funny how it was absolutely fine one minute then f**ked the next with no signs leading up to it.

Yeah sounds knackered, ditch it. They're weird like that, I think it's that the first time it doesn't have quite enough power to start the car the excessive drain just completely kills it dead.

Lead acid batteries do not like being discharged.

it's a calcium one is that the same as
Lead acid?
apparently you have to use silver calcium batteries with the mk3 mondeo (maybe all fords now not sure) due to the charging system.

how much do scrappies pay for a battery?
I have a old cat I could take aswell, just wondering if it's worth the 10 mile trip or wether I'm been a
Hippo

Dunno about the calcium tbh, I'd imagine it's still lead-based but with calcium ions as well.

I've never bothered scrapping batteries tbh, just take them to the dump.
