Hey chaps,

So noticed over the last couple of days my car hasnt been cooling down whilst sat in traffic as it has been previously.

The water temp needle has been pretty erattic, one moment its fine then as soon as i hit traffic it rapidly creeps up and stays at 97oC for a few mins before going past that and in some cases just past the 107oC point.

I drove into London today with this happening but as soon as i got to my job i got out the car at the normal 97oC temp and found both fans running and it didnt go above whilst i let it idle for a few mins.

So i got it home today and took the brown plug off the thermostat and both fans kick in slow then switch to high but THEN the passenger side fan stops spinning and only the drivers one spins.

Is this a dodgy relay or any ideas?

I replaced the fans on this car a year ago because of lazy fan motors that needed a nudge to start them spinning up.

I flicked the passenger side fan when testing them and it doesnt spin up, leaving just the drivers one spinning.

Ideas much appreciated? Thanks

Could this be a dodgy coolant temp sensor giving me funny readings? I guess that wouldnt explain the passenger fan switching itself off after a few seconds when unplugging the brown sensor.... Unsure

Thanks dee, but at this stage im more inclined to think its something that controls the fans not working, i.e a relay or the bitron? Unsure

Mine was doing something similar a while ago. See here: http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=119690

Your fan is failing when the voltage changes from series 1/2 speed to parallel full speed independent operation, thus I suspect your body side connector to the fan loom (behind passenger side of the rad) is corroded. I had to manually run a 12V feed to the relay. You can diagnose this by testing the voltages at the various relays.

The no 5 part is pointing to the connector you must take apart. You may need a flat bladed driver and a small hammer to get the connector hog ring to start to turn.

My pin had corroded entirely:

I had been investigating why my fan had persisted in running all night when the car was off and locked, and found that to have been the cause of my earlier missing 12V from memory.

Thanks tvrfan thats some awesome advice there! Thumbs up

I was going to yank the bumper off today but as it happens the heavens opened up and it p**sed down solidly so i didnt bother!

First ports of call are going to be the relays, then probably the bitron and failing that, the wires under the tow strap area!

I'd go with wires as dvdfan007 says, was issue on mine but I'll go with it's on the fan side.

that is exactly what happened to mine.

Update time - ok i thought it was a bit strange that both my fans appeared to be coming on at 97 degrees on low speed but the engine would continue to get hot rather than cool down as it used to.

It occurred to me i hadnt checked my water levels in aggggeees. So i opened the rad cap to see nothing in there Doh

My poor engine was just thirsty, she took 1.5L of water and i took her into London and back out again today and she didnt go above 97 degrees.

However, i still dont have the passenger fan working at high speed, only the drivers side works.

So as advised it indicates either a corroded 12v feed pin OR a funny relay. Should be an easy fix when i can find the time to yank the bumper off!

For the meantime though going on todays performance she wont be getting too hot again

Thanks all Smile
