As some of you who read the latest car magazines will know, Toyota is on the cusp of launching the new GT86 Sports Car in the UK. A joint development between Toyota and Subaru, is the first RWD normally aspitated sports car for either brand for many years.

The focus has been on light weight (circa 1200kg), excellent handling and a real drivers car, with balance and poise.

I've been to Donington Park today with Toyota on the training course and had a chance to bang loads of laps in, with an ex Le-mans racing driver (cant rember his name LOL!!).

First impressions are good, its low slung and even someone as tall as me can get comfy behind the wheel, seats are very supportive and fit just right, next to no rear leg room when im driving, unless Douglas Barder is a regular passanger in the back. Steering wheel is a nice small size, with just the right amount of adjustment. Instruments are clear (very Subaru in their Font and layout), with a big 8k rev counter taking centre stage in the dash. Transmission is either a 6 speed manual or paddle shift Auto. I grabbed the manual as its the drivers choice!

From the off it rides nice, not over stiff and quite supple, gearchange is nicely weighted and precise with quite a short throw. Steering seems accurate and quite quick, with good feel through the rim, not overlight like the rest of the range.

Mechanically both brands share the same flat four boxer 2.0 engine with 197bhp at 6500 rpm and 151lb of tourqe. Acceleration is good, not neck bending fast, but quite swift, one big surprise was the engine noise in the cabin, theres an accoustic pipe from the inlet tract straight into the drivers footwell, my advice would be to block it up, as instead of a nice throaty induction roar, all you hear is mechanical thrashing, like a toolbox in a washing machine, really sounds quite s**t tbh.

Performance in a straight line is addequate, a modern turbo'd hot hatch would be long gone in front in a drag race.

Handling is where the GT86/Subaru RBZ is supposed to be the best in class, and yes it is good, very adjustable on the throttle, quite playfull even at speed, yet safe with it. Think of it as a big MX5 and you get the idea.

Braking is good, although the ABS is a bit too keen on track, probably because of the tyres.... ahhh the tyres. They have fitted the same low rolling resistance tyres (michelin primacy 17"Wink as found on the prius, with a view to making it handle so playfully at lower speeds. For track use they are dog s**t. Within 4 laps they went off big style with the heat, and made it feel more wayward.

With better tyres and a tad more power it would be the ideal starter RWD track toy. As it is a well driven 306 would have it over within 2 laps, as the speeds the GT86 was reaching were easily bettered by a Std 306 on R888's quite easily. Best I managed through Craner Curves today was 107mph (that was just clipping the limiter in 4th before braking for the old hairpin) the Pug was easily 10mph faster through there, same story down the back (dunlop) straight.

Would i buy one for £25,000? erm no. Id put that sort of money into an 911 or such like.

Not sure at the moment Marco. Some of the lads have been twice already (lucky bas**rds), and they might be going later in the year again, September time ish?

I'm desperate to get back over there and get some more time in at the ring again, like we did last year.

Having a rumage through the s**t they gave us in the final dealer de-brief, i found a memory stick with some footage of my tracktime. I saw the 2 bullet cams in the car, and the instructor fellow doing summat in the door pocket, but didnt know they were videoing it!

Didn't the concept have a nice V6? Shame they watered it down with a meagre 4-cylinder engine. Roll eyes

It's rare that appealing concept cars make it to production in any form so it's not all bad.

I love the look of this car, it's just such a shame it doesn't have 50 more horsepower, I reckon that'd absolutely transform it.

As you say Matt - £25k? Nope. In a few years when you can pick one up for £15k? Still probably no, but eventually. Just a shame you'd have to go through the pain of modifying it to make a good track toy, the think we always hated about the MX5 was its lack of power.

EVO magazine were vastly disappointed by this car in their latest test. It has a scintillating chassis but not enough power to exploit it without fully committing to massive entry speed and fast turn in inertia to overcome the grip as it can't unstick the back end on power alone. This left the car feeling pin sharp when driven 8 tenths but without any throttle adjustability it left them cold. As Owain says the car needs more power, this may be overcome with later models but it seems a very silly mistake to make on a car which is so heavily marketed and hyped as a drivers car.

If I remember correctly it's basically the Scooby engine but without the turbo on it. If it had the turbo, it would've been an absolute blast, without it the car just seems a bit limp-wristed.

I can see these coming in through someone like Litchfield Imports and having a proper engine fitted, bit like they do with their Type25's.

2.5 STI lump in one of these could be epic Devil

I wonder if that feeling was exacerbated by the fact that they are new cars? IME Michelins whatever they are need a good thousand miles or more to wear in sometimes, and will never perform that well on track till they're about half worn, much like any treaded road tyre tbf!

With regards to the engines, historically the boxer engines used to be long stroke, this new joint engine is 86mm x 86mm bore/stroke so it revs to over 8000 rpm, toyota did the mapping/emmissions side of it as well as re-designing the heads for better efficiency, the cam cover bears both the Toyota and Subaru logos which shows they aint afraid to share the "glory".

According to the PR man yesterday, it features a baffled sump and high pressure oil pump as standard, designed for track work, even the toyota front pads are a harder compound that the Subaru ones, with track mind in work.

Mei - good point on the tyres, these cars were litterally brand new, just PDI'd and fuelled up.

I was having a natter with Johnny Milner who was there yesterday and he's of the same opinion as the rest of us, these initial cars will be a foothold in the range for faster turbo'd versions in the next few years. Theres loads of room in the engine bay for intercoolers and turbochargers, and it would make a lot of sense to introduce a turbo version at a later date, bit like the Focus ST and Focus RS in their range.

The Genesis was a 3.7 litre RWD but didn't pass EU safety regs, so not being sold over here.
