My 99 T Rallye had the first one. I don't know whether the two types overlapped or when the change-over was, or whether or not Rallyes were different, i.e. were they fitted with lower spec ICE than the GTI-6.

For the second one (fitted to Phase 3 cars - not sure about Phase 2) yes you will need the trim surround. Still aval from Pug - I ordered one 2 weeks ago.

You prob know this already but whichever one you go for, make sure you get the code with it or get it really cheap, as it will cost 20 quid to get the code from Pug.

Mine is a T reg gti6 ('99) and had the first style, also came with the crystal headlights which were phase 3, although various other parts of my car are phase 2, i don't think there was any definitive switchover date for what parts were used on which car. Parts bin special FTW!

It was gradual really this is why you have alot of p2s with parts from both 1 and 3 they were using old stock.

Given that though id say this occurred mainly in 97 and 98 r/s in my experience
