Car had an overheating moment, a couple of days later when I started the engine it sounded/was running on 3 cylinders. It went after a min or so.

We checked the coil packs and plugs, seemed fine.

Started throwing smoke out of the exhaust from cold.

No sign of oil in the coolant, no mayo under oil cap.

Did a Compression test.
Pistons 1,2 and 3 at 15 bar
Piston 4 16bar.
All pistons dry after taking plugs out. Number 4 damp with either oil, water or fuel (unlikely fuel) after compression test.

Doesn't seem to be a loss in power. Have had a slight water temp problem tonight on the drive home, it went back to normal temp when I got on an open flowing road.

Does this sound like a buggered head gasket?

Any ideas for further testing?

Thanks.

sounds possible, its number 4 that usually goes (timing belt end),

The higher reading is likely to have been from some water in the cylinder, though I've never done a compression test as the clearing misfire from cold start is a sure sign that its on its way.

only one of the three I've done this year has ever so slight signs of oil mixing, that one still had pressure in the cooling system 2 days after driving it a few hundred yards!

heater matrix was leaking on two of the three btw...

out of curiosity, why does the heater matrix go with a HG? Increased coolant preasure and an already weakened old heater matrix?

Another vote for the HG with those symptoms. Yes

Yeah, I'd say HG too with those symptoms. Check the coolant for pressurisation when it's cold. That's a good confirmation indicator.

Basically yes, although the matrix doesn't always pop.

Its a head gasket.

No mayo under the cap, but we found mayo and water in the oil catch tank Sad

Ordered the kits needed to sort it.

Yep. Might use the old head of the engine that got flooded. Seemed to all be in good shape. Will check the valves, might look into getting it skimmed incase it warped when taking it off the old block.

On the bright side, I have been painting up engine parts to clean up the bay, just means I now have to finish them quicker than planned.
