This happened today, reckon the belts slipped after this bolt was loose and got between a pulley and the belt, sending timing out and slashing the belt. Not sure if the head is s**teyed yet. I m thinking these bolts need loctite on them, check yours now!Cry

Look like an inner cam cover bolt possibly, although it's so long since I've done a belt on a '6' now the memory is struggling a bit...

Yep, 6 bolts on the inner cambelt cover, mind allot of people don't use thread-lock when fitting them back in the head, A huge no no.

My head was rebuilt before I owned the car a few years ago. Getting my local garage to put a belt on and time it up, guess thats when I find out the bad news. The car is currently sitting on a ramp next to 3 escort rally cars, a classic 911 rally car and a 6R4. Will try and get some pictures next week.

If the belt has slipped/jumped or come off you WILL have piston to valve contact. Yes

So potentially, what would you do while the head was apart? Do these heads respond well to a bit of porting and polishing? Pre incident it was producing good power but if the heads being rebuilt how can I improve things? Dont want to change the cams and not intending on charging it

They don't need porting, they flow extremely well as standard.

Just make sure when it's apart you check every valve and guide, get the head pressure tested and skimmed and a new set of valve stem oil seals. Yes

I had a very similar problem to this after i drove my 6 home for the first time.

It sounded like a tractor and turned out there was a bolt wedged between the belt and the cambelt cover. It gauged out a line around the belt.
Apparantly a bolt or two got in with the camshafts too at some point and they had to be machined again.

But it somehow didnt damage the head. Sounds sweet as a nut and has done since.

Hopefully yours will have the same outcome
