Sounds like it's gone between a chamber and a waterway, if it has gone.

so is it likely that it may be the head at fault then and I should get that checked?

I've got 2 spare heads here if it is a dud...

No, the head's unlikely to be damaged. Mei's point is that you should have it checked over and pressure tested before having it skimmed.

Does indeed sound like HG to be honest with those symptoms. Yes

the pressure test I mean is done to a complete head off the engine, confirms the valves are seating as well as the cooling system is ok in the head.

Bit of an update...

Drained and refilled the system and bled it at the 3 points
Bulkhead by brake reservoir
Thermostat housing
Top of rad

LOTS of bubbles and air...

It now sits at below 70 for ages before slowly (very slowly) creaping to just past 90 and i mean slowly whereas when it happend yesterday it seemed to shoot up...
got to temp and fans kicked in and knocked it to just below 90 where it stayed and was barely creaping up at all...

BUT it does appear to be smoking (white vapour it looks to me) more than I think it should, my cat needs replacing though and that is a job I've been meaning to do and it is running rich due to this (decat and fitting kit ready to go on prob do tomorrow)

The catalytic converter doesn't affect the fuel mixture.

Excessive steam from the exhaust is a tell tale sign of HG failure though. See what happens with the coolant now; if it's pressurising the coolant then you'll know about it very soon.

Leave it to get up to temp, and then switch it off and let it cool.

Come back to the car circa 8+ hours after it was last started, and remove the rad cap. You shouldn't hear a sound.
If you hear a big "hiss" or the coolant comes firing out at you, it's pretty much a guaranteed HG failure. Yes

let it run for a while after bleeding and the level wasnt rising in the rad like it was before.

I will see what its like when I take it out next... if it gets hot I'll pull over...

I'll sort out buying the parts anyway as I get it all at trade so could flog it on if I dont end up using it all...

Thought I'd go for a quick road test...

went up to 80 on the temp when following a van but as soon as I got onto "open" road again it went back to barely above 70...

Got dad to watch as I drove down the road after I'd got back before I put the car away and zero white smoke...

WTF that was all about I dont know, he forgot the compression tester (left it by his toolbox) but I'll get him to bring it home tomorrow just to double check.

I wouldn't buy a stat from a factors to be honest...

I did this years ago as it was £6 against Peugeot's £18. It got stuck open after only 1000 miles and borewashed an engine. Sad
Got a replacement from Pug and it's been perfect, still running it years later in my current engine. Yes

Never again would I buy a thermostat from a factors...No

Some items are fine from a factors, but in my experience a lot of the time if you buy cheap you end up buying twice. Yes

more of an update...

Bleed the system and it behaves itself for a while...

but it doesnt last... I have noticed though the plastic housing just under the filler for the rad has split, its blowing air bubbles so could this cause air to get in and cause air lock?

I've not been using the car now. gonna see about getting the split plastic welded as its a nissens rad and its right on the join by the looks of it

I think this is definatly your problem, it will be fine wen you bleed it for a wile. To be honest id replace the rad unless you can fix it good enough to hold pressure Thumbs up

I have a standard Rad here that I'll put on this weekend...

Will see if i can get the other rad fixed... would be a shame to chuck it as its really good condition bar the bit where its obviously split (only knew as blew bubbles as I spilt a bit of water when bleeding)

I think it will cure your problem, bare in mind the normal engine temp will be slightly higher than the nissens (i think)
