Just completed a head rebuild on my 6 and I have a knocking sound coming in on operating temperature. It sounds almost like a dry camshaft that sort of dull knocking noise although the motor revs up with no problems at all if held at 2 500RPM you got a slight missfire which is worth mentioning.

I have spent a long time rebuilding the head and checked all the major things like bent vlaves and cracked heads it hasnt been skimmed too low either and it was spotless when it went back on Ive also put a new pump and rad in for peace of mind. The car also tends to search for fuel a bit and when under breaking will just cut out Ive cleaned all sensors and its made it a slight bit better but will probably end up replacing them.

This car has done 141K on some good history with a lady owner for the last 3 years
any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S reason for the rebuild is from a massive overheating disaster which happened 2 weeks after I bought it and after not finding a leak in the head of any sort I decided to just rebuild it

I have a video of the noise I will try and upload later
Thanks again guys

As above, they should be emptied when camshafts removed.

Did you read up on timing the cams up before you refitted head?

Easy to bend valves just by turning cam pulleys too farThumbs down

Regards the stalling, have you tried a ECU reset?Thumbs up

got a video?

not unknown for bottom ends to knock after a HG failure, especially with relatively high miles.

I'd definitly whip the sump off to see what's going on before making any decisions.

I don't know if I'd go to the extent of taking the engine out though Erm?

well I wouldn't go as far as to say fubbared, but certainly a bit tired and will be fubbared if you keep running it.

taking a 6 sump off in situ is a right PITA.

Agreed but no where near enough of one to contemplate removing the whole engine to take it off Imo.

Most people wont have the equipment to remove the engine either where as you can take the sump off with a fairly basic set of tools.

Sump in situ takes me about 2 hours to remove, including jacking the car up, removing undertray etc. Yes

The question is though, in the condition the vehicle is currently in, what would you be able to sell it for? Not a lot, that I can tell you. Sad

Easy, air con pump off, one part of the air filter, 16mm bolt and a few 6mm Allen key bolts?
