Hi,

Don't know how to properly describe this but this is what happens:

Normally if I am slowing down and possibly going lock to lock (or almost) and applying the brakes etc, in the way you would if you had to reverse into your drive and sometimes it happens when I turn into a petrol station, my steering feels like it gets stuck. It feels almost as if it is caught on something and it also feels like the power steering has stopped Dunno

Then if I force it i sometimes hear a little pop - I also have some knocking underneath the drivers side front, but I have no idea what it is - could these two issue be related?

If so any ideas?

Cheers! Thumbs up

All of the above would certainly need checking and then whatever gets flagged up during the check would need replacing. Yes

Personally I think it is probably a balljoint problem. Yes

If it turns out to be this, it won't be that dear to fix it.

Droplinks also cause knocking/creaking when turning the steering wheel.

I found that mine did that when they were fubared and also the car generally just didnt feel like it wanted to corner.

In contrast when i replaced them car felt great again and was happy to corner. Also had my tracking done recently which made the steering wheel feel alot more willing to rotate

Beaconsfield isnt far from me i could pop in sometime if you get miffed Smile

Thanks pal appreciate that Thumbs up currently in Bath at Uni at the moment. The knocking is quite fast if that makes sense? There is this road that I drive down every day and it really goes for it down there! And every little bump pretty much results in a knock Sad I've called the garage across the road from me and waiting to get a price back they aren't too dear normally - I've had a look on the forum and it seems as though these parts are relatively easy to change but that coming from you pros!

Cheers for all the help, much appreciated

unlikely to be the issue mentioned above, most XS's are the chocolate teapot MA gearbox, not the BE box which is far stronger, though not an impossibility.

if there's knocking from little bumps thats likely to be the droplinks, but the steering issue could still be elsewhere.

Hope you're right! Great sounds like lots of the underneath of my car is falling apart - wish I knew what I was looking for and could fit this stuff myself save a fortune!

Thanks

If its droplinks they shouldnt really charge you more than £90-100.

£30 per side plus 30mins labour to change them

Haha I know I have been through it many times thinking 'should I go for this or not?' I think correct diagnosis and tools is the setback for me - still no call back from the garage though its weird when you try and offer people money and they dont take you up on the offer?!

To be honest, to do most jobs on the '6' you only need a basic toolkit. It's only when it comes to the more specialised jobs when you need different tools.
The only way to learn is to do it though mate. Yes
If the garage don't call you back, looks like you might be doing it yourself anyway...LOL

Hahaha, just took it in and they had a look it needs:

- both ball joints
- both track rod ends
- both droplinks

Dunno whether or not they are having me on but I suppose its possible - they gave me a price of £160 in including parts which I think is pretty reasonable - what u think?

£160 in parts?! Shock did you go to a pug dealer?

GSF

£16.20 each TRE for premium, £7.80 for standard.

£19 for droplinks, or £11.

£11.40 per BJ.

so about £76 to 92 odd.

I'd say crack out the spanners and angle grinder and have a go yourself.

Well that's true Andy, some places even want to charge you extra for it after the work!

Defiantly demand it, the amount of main dealers that don't do this or charge for it.
