Hi all

I am looking at a gti6 and got a compression test done on it.

4 - 175
3 - 180
2- 175
1 - 180

Don't want to get a crappy engine. I thought it should be around 200 psi across all 4 cylinders.

Do these results suggest excessive wear?

It didn't pull as hard as my other gti6 and I was thinking bad compression or a slipped belt.

All opinions greatly appreciated.

Cheers Whistle

Over time engines show wear,.. I'd worry if they'd dropped 20psi over the course of a few months
or if there was a vast difference in psi between chambers!
and there could be other reasons why this 6 doesnt seem to pull as hard as your last one,..
i.e. sensors a more restricted airflow etc etc,..

just try to keep up with the maintenance jobs Thumbs up

Sounds about right to me the results vary depending on the gauge whether done on a cold engine or when warm.I done one recently and got 100 psi on all 4 cylinders then done a leak down test which showed the engine to be in perfect condition so the compression test results you have got i would say you got a good engine

You say that Bob but I am running a compression ratio of 8:1 and I still get about 165psi. Standard compression is 10.8:1 so you would expect higher. Most decent engines will give out around the 200-210psi.

However, as Bob says it will depend on the conditions the test was done under. The engine should have been warm and the throttle should have been wide open to get the most accurate result. Yes

Completely depends on the tester - look at the differences between the cylinders rather than overall figure. Had a few testers over the years and they've never been the same.

Stan - your car might make 135 on his tester Wink

100 psi sounds like the throttle was closed....

those figures look just fine, if it doesn't pull as hard check the cam timing.

That was the point I was trying to make. Yes

These engines provided they are looked after should still retain that sort of compression figure. I also agree with Meirion get the cam timing checked and altered if need be. Smile
