my question is, and i may get the hell ripped outta me if this is a dumb question, but are the ECU's from the gti-6 and xsara vts ph1 the same/ compatible? Ive been informed my ecu is ill and is causing problems with the stepper motor functioning properly, causing the annoying stalling im getting. I have been quoted 300 quid to have it tested and reprogrammed.

Thanks

An S reg '6' would be a Phase 2 so you're best off looking for one of that age. Wink

Any as long as it's a 1ap 10 will be fine
I've currently got a phase 1 ecu in my phase 2.5 rallye

Just make sure when you plug the new one in (unless it's a professionally unlocked one) that your ignition is on! I go fully on (bar the cranking point) when I do it
otherwise you'll just lock it Sad

The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, its self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks does its own oil change. It's just a pity the management system is so fecking temperamental.

doesnt matter where your ignition is when you fit, only when you remove.

I don't think it matters where it is when you refit but if you have an "open" Ecu not a "unlocked" one I have been told that if you don't disconnect the immobilser wiring on the car you are refiiting it to the Ecu will re lock so maybe the way you have been told prevents this happening.

To the original poster I would advise you get a second opinion on the diagnosis as there are lots of things that stop gti6's and Vts's idlling properly but I'm yet to come across one where the Ecu has been the cause.

Have you tried an ICV clean and an ECU reset?

.

sounds about right
but as the ecu isnt actually coded to the car this is the way round it if you are keeping the 306 imobiliser (all the imobiliser does is send a 12v signal to the ecu)
if its for a conversion in a 205 for example you only need an open ecu

Had a brand Icv fitted in august, as for ECU reset is it as straight forward as the battery being disconnected over nite?
As for the diag it was the deepest any body had managed to get, no other tests came up with anything as thorough.

Thanks for all the info so far guys.

ECU reset can be carried out by leaving the battery disconnected for over 20 mins. Then reconnect it. Wink
