I rwciently fitted a rebuilt engine in my 6, started it up, everything was fine, drove carfully to the dual carriageway and my oil temp and water temp suddenly shot up, I pulled over straight away to let it cool down I couldn't see the problem at the time. I drove very carfully home, about 6 miles. Do you think this would have done any damage, cos its got a slight whining sound, but it may have been there all along due to having no dash so can hear everything. The sound also builds with the revs. Any feed back would be appriciated.

Thanks.

The pulleys are all new so I'd hope it wouldn't be one of them. Wink

It could also be the waterpump bearing as with no water it would have been running dry , as above ,remove the aux belt and have a listen , if the noise remains i would suspect the pump , and that would need changing asap as it is driven by the cam belt , if it seizes , you prob no what that means .....

Agreed, sounds like the cambelt is too tight. You say its freshly rebuilt, whoever timed it up has probably overtighted the tension. Yes

Come to think of it, if you're trying to diagnose an engine whining noise why is this thread entitled "bottom radiator hose popped off"? LOL

Because the was the route of the problem, Yh its probably the wrong title for the thread, but the information gained has given some good ideas to the possible problem. Renamed. Thumbs up

I built this engine - it's not an over-tightened cam-belt, i've done a few of these before Wink

I have a feeling what Clive said about the water-pump could be the issue - the block / waterpump etc is going to get very hot, very very quickly if it's dropped its coolant.

It wouldn't surprise me if the bearings over-heated and gone tight, causing the whining.

Did you drive it 6 miles with no coolant in it?

The the thing is, you will never know how hot it got - the water temp gauge will only give an accurate reading if it's surrounded by water. If the water has drained down from the thermostat housing, the gauge may have indicated things are OK, but in reality things could of been extremely hot.

Roll eyes

Your thread was pointless...

You were asking members what brake setup they would recommend you purchase to stop immediately from 120mph ON THE ROAD during illegal street races. The suggestions that people were giving you were throw back at them, as after all these people have tried and tested their suggestions on the TRACK where they don't need brakes that stop them to 0mph at the speed of light...

In the 8+ years I have been here, no-one from what I remember has ever asked for such specific advice for a particular situation, and therefore you weren't going to get a decent suggestion to your liking as no-one here does what you proclaim to do or condones it...

The thread was not pointless and whether anyone does what you claim i do is irrelevant the thread was about brakes and yet you felt it ok to advise me on how to spend my money and give advice on solicitors.Yet i would be calling you a liar if you said you dont drive over 70mph on a motorway in your supercharged 451bhp 306 gti6 or any other car you drive which then makes you a Hypocrite due to it being ok for you to drive illegally .But i unlike you would not resort to your level and make comments about how fully paid up forum members should spend their money and advise them on matters they have not asked advice on or to call you a Hypocite and liar unless i fully knew the facts you could drive on the motorway at 70 mph and alongside your forum admin duties be a road safety campainer that might explain you being over sensitive regarding speeding. But cyberspace does make little boys into men via messages and comments.I guess i must be old fashioned in thinking if men had personal issues with one another the only way to sort it out is like Gentlemen but cyberspace may not reconise this tried and tested method.
Regards to the whine i also get this when i plant the throttle but when progressively on throttle i only get it slightly

Maybe, you've got a point...Yes

Anyway, however I choose to drive any vehicle on the track or road will remain a complete mystery except to those who know me personally. Yes

What I don't do though, is to openly admit doing something barbarically illegal on a world-wide public forum for every man and his dog to see, and then ask advice about the vehicle I'm doing it in.

Let's agree to disagree, and let the OP have his thread back. Smile

Its not a case of agree to disagree when someone asks a question to how i drive in relation to my braking needs i will answer it.Due to this being a car forum and me being a fully paid member i wil ask any advice i need. The difference being i will do it with dignity and refrain from making comments about other members. When someonce calls me a twat i wont accept it However you being admin seem to find it acceptable when other forum members make rude comments and call folk twat etc.But due to certain members being your personal freinds you turn a blind eye when it suits. So basically you accept foul comments if and when it suits yourself and fully flex your admin muscles for a better word when it suits your personal needs.Well i have given my opinion based on facts i suggest if you reply to this base it on facts.Like i said previously if you got any personal issues with me we can sort it out like Gentlemen it would help future forum threads if we send each other a PM instead. Its disrespectful to members who put up a thread and be subjected to having their thread sidetracked with a quote bearing no relation to their topic so appologies from myself for making you subject to this.
Regards this whinning sound i get this alot also, it seems to come from the cambelt area always on full throttle and sometimes when on progressive throttle mainly after 4000 rpm
