So this is my new purchase; I couldn't resist a 306 as original and as mint as this.

The plan is to keep it original... apart from squeezing out some more ponies from the aluminium lump under the bonnet.

I am very impressed with the car in standard guise to be fair. It's supposed to have 112hp but to drive the thing you would guess more like 130hp.

The handling is it's ace card; far superior to the Gti6 dare I say it! Having less weight up-front changes the dynamic tremendously. It feels more balanced and feels like there is a larger proportion of weight on the back end. Understeer is non-existent and turn-in is much sharper.

Obviously it's a lot slower than a Gti6 in a straight line but as far as the grin factor is concerned I would say the XS is more fun to drive as you have to drive it harder to get the same effect.

Side by side the Gti6 is the better performance car, but with a nice twisty B-road ahead on a sunny day the XS is a great drivers car.

All this with group 6 insurance and better fuel economy.

Some extra horsepower would definately improve things and would complement the lighter chassis... so I shall be collecting all the parts needed to get the car producing a healthier hp figure.

Some photos of the car at the moment;

Significantly less weight on the nose end as the XS 1.8 Block is alloy afaik. Looks gorgeous to be fair!

Very nice!! I had 2 of these about 8 years ago and loved them! Was my first proper car! And to be fair they were pretty quick!

My Nile one was quicker than my cherry one and could keep up with a mildly tuned xsi! Then I put it on the central reservation! Doh!

Keep telling yourself that pal. Whistle

But seriously, it looks really tidy and the better weight distribution would be great in a 6/Rallye. And there is something about finding a really mint condition car that hasn't been thrashed, sat outside for years etc like most cars its age.

On another note, only one of your pics works for me (second one down) - the rest are blacked out saying "access forbidden - try to login if you think this is wrong - picturepush.com"

I was wondering about getting a aluminium blocked 2.1 gti6 engine made at one point, sounds like hassle though

I have my old xs on my drive still, loved it! Gti inlet, fuel rail and throttle body on mine, kept up with a 6 but was lacking top rev range power.... Looks a nice car though mate, fair play!

crikey, some bodger has been at your thermostat housing, shouldn't be any sealant at all on the plastic elbow.

I found the biggest single improvement on my 1.8 was a 6 exhaust manifold-the original is the most restrictive thing.

I didn't think it looked right. Any work carried out on the car was done at yeomans Peugeot, so can only imagine it had a leak on the housing.

It looks like the original xs manifold is made from stainless steel not cast iron. Is this the case?
Also the branches look to have a really wide bore. Not equal length though.

Do you still have your XS John?

No, long gone, it was a cabrio and only a second car. I'm afraid I can't remember what the original manifold was made of. The 6 exhaust gave a distinct improvement but is a bit of a b**ch to fit-involves re-routing the heater hoses. Even then I used heat wrap to prevent melt down.
Just a thought with yours, it looks a bit low at the rear and could probably do with setting up with a little nose down stance. lovely looking car though.

a bit? a nightmare you mean!

you can find some pics of the installation in my project thread btw

The 1.8 has 2 different types of manifolds, btw a cast one and steel one, depends on the year.
Check if you have one or two lambda's too before swapping mani's. As your going to have to use a gti6 exhaust system.

Car's looking good though!

Those pictures were taken whilst parked facing downhill, hence the arse on the floor. When parked on level ground the stance is just right.

With regards to using a larger gti throttle body, will the air/fuel ratio be correct? I wouldn't want to melt any pistons.

New splitter fitted and fogs painted. Also fitted a pair of number plate surrounds; I'm just waiting for some new plates to come in the post.
