G'day all

I welcomed myself the other day in the general thread, so now it is time to post up some info on my 'beast' that I picked up.

Now you all have to remember very minimal amounts of the GTi6 were imported to Australia (around 200 from 1997-1999), assuming that many are written off and the others are getting on, the standard of the cars are somewhat poor and the mint ones that are left go for over $10,000AU or almost 7000 pounds.

I was hunting around to find a real bargain, that needed a lot of TLC. Something that I can work on for a while in the garage.

So after much hunting I found a 1998 GTi6 in Nile Blue with 219,000Ks (136miles) that drove (well and hard) and paint was OK. In the end I paid AU $625 which works out to about 400 pounds. I'm sure you could get better examples, however, my options were limited haha!

It has limited service history. It was running great, however I am having some ECU issues. I will post up a thread in the Electrical section to cover this. I'm sure I will get it running again, with the help of you chaps.

My plans are to restore to original condition with the added options of uprated suspension, mounts, re-spray etc. Please stay tuned and all your help will be greatly appreciated as the knowledge here is Australia is not great on the GTi6.

Please view for your pleasure, a GTi6 down-under! Big grin

Wongy we have a few pugs here, not as many as you guys though. A lot of people cruise around in the common SS commodore with the 6.3L V8.

atterz, everything about Australia is crazy Smile

$625?????? No way! That is cheap!

The reason I say that is because my sister has just moved to Canberra and is looking for a car and it seems to me that the £500 you might spend here in the UK on a banger, you're easily going to spend £2000 in Australia; and the Australian car will more than likely have crazy high mileage! (And I thought the Americans drove everywhere...)

Oh, and hello by the way Dominic Smile I'm Deepak!

Good luck with your project, looking forward to how it turns out!

I remember seeing a few 306 GTi6s in Oz. Used to see one on a daily basis in Adelaide.

Where in Melbourne do you live? I lived in North Coburg.

Good buy, well done. At least it won't be rusty having had more than 10 winters of salt sprayed into its nether regions like UK cars. Everything else is pretty easy to sort, believe me.

If you lived in NSW you could have got some of those EU-style plates that look a lot better than the US-style Aussie ones with little pictures and slogans on like "Victoria - The Place To Be".

Yo, there's a couple of 205s dirt cheap in Sydney. A phase 2 for spares and a ph 3 project. all the parts and some spares. I was going to take them, but my missus blew the turbo on her (piece of ****) Jeep and my mate pulled out Sad

Think ph2 is a 1.6 and ph3 is the 1.9

They gotta be gone this weekend. Wants $1600 the lot, though may be open to offers. PM me and i'll pass on the details. Easy Smile

I wonder if the ones sent to other countries like australia ran a different map from the factory to run better in the different climate eg.

I have only seen one Blaze which I think was a GTI-6 and one Blue S16.

When we moved we bought a 2005 Fiesta Zetec which cost $7500 (5 grand!). Traded it in a few months back for a brand new Hyundai, why pay stupid money on a used car when a new one isn't much more! Set me back $25k for 5 years of warranty hassle free ownership (hopefully). My girlfriend uses it to commute and its fantastic on petrol.

Care to share the 205 details for Sydney?
