Ah... Still, a competant mechanic should be able to do adjustable pulleys easy enough surely?

A competent mechanic should be able to do adjustable cam pulleys Aaron, yes. Yes

Your right about the bottom pulley issue though, if you're not aware of this issue and you try and do a belt that has this problem it could easily go wrong. Sad

I keep a standard bottom pulley in perfect condition in my toolbox for whenever I do a belt just for timing purposes, although to be honest you don't need the bottom pulley to line it up if you know where the woodruff key should be at half stroke...

f**k tippex! just pin it properly.

and if it doesn't pin, common sense would dictate that the pulley is donald ducked...

Isnt the nation reason for mistiming the engine and causing a tap caused by a knackered crank pulley? Of so, people should factor it in and should have nowt to worry about.

nah can be mis-timed cam pulleys also.

How do people get this wrong? I worried about doing mine for ages then just got stuck in. Pinned the cam pulleys and crank pulley, changed the belt, rotate engine by hand a few times, pin it again, all good, job done????

Yes, its not difficult. However, if you haven't done this sort of thing before I guess it can be a bit daunting. Its not that hard to screw up and unfortunately plenty of people have done it. Sad

Stan - when tensioning the belt what sort of tightness do you aim for around tensioner pulley 'g' in the pic. Should the belt be tight enough so that the back of the belt grips it or looser so it can be rotated by hand when the belt is tensioned?

I don't really check that to be honest mate.

General rule of thumb is to have the belt tightness between the 'G' pulley and the inlet pulley set so that forward to back movement is about 10mm and you can't twist the belt more than 90 degrees, but you should be able to twist it to that 90. Yes
