Got my 6 off ebay unseen last year. Luckily all was good other than the steering feeling heavier than it should. At the time i just thought i needed to man up but having recently driven my brothers hdi (which felt far lighter on its feet) i'm now sure that something isn't right with mine.

Having google searched i found this on another forum:

"had this exact job now a couple times on 306's
i know exactly whats wrong
easy and free to fix
the knuckle joint at the bottom of the column in seized
its inside the car at below the steering wheel
take it right off, drench it in wd40 and work it till its loose
my mate done the exact same as you, new rack, top mounts, balljoints erc etc
was losing the rag with it, and spent a fortune
then i fixed it in 10 mins for free, its realy common fault
but its easy fixed, defo try this before you go puling anything else off
i gaurantee thats whats wrong with it"

It seemed to do the job for the guy who posted and given its free to do and made out to be easy I'm going to try this on mine as a first port of call.

Can anyone give me a few pointers as checked this site and haynes and no one seems to refer to the part above as a knuckle joint so could someone help me out with some pointers assuming what i've found in italics above is not complete boll*cks. Wink

I've taken a pic of what i think they mean by the knuckle at the bottom of the steering column - could really do with some suggestions on the best means of getting it off to soak in wd40.

For something as vitally important as steering i'd take it to a garage....

It could be the bearings and joints in the steering column needing grease. Could also be the PAS fluid is very tired and old.

Any knocking noises at all?

No knocking, whining or leaking, but might as well change the pas fluid as its not been done for a while. Do you reckon it's a steering column out job to grease as quite a lot of it is hidden under dash

Oh, it's on cyclones running 195/55 tyres. Tyre pressures are spot on.

I would try not to. You can get at most it fairly easily anyway when you start to look into it.
Could be the joint on to the rack anyway.

Found this guide after a google search - relates to a smart car Thumbs down but a decent enough guide all the same - will update with how it goes.

Just thought I'd add the outcome to this thread - quite a lot of people don't i've noticed which is annoying.

http://www.evilution.co.uk/567

Followed this link so jacked the front of the car up and sprayed plus gas on the 2 UJ's spent 5 mins working the steering. Did the same a few days later and then some spray grease and the steering is pretty much back to how it should feel. Result!
