oddly enough i was looking for a berlingo for my old man and seeing what his transit was worth and came across this, don't come on here much now but thought a few on here would find it interesting but as usual i don't know why i bothered as i am so behind with everything.
hi carl i hope all is well in leicester

Yes all is good mate, hope alls good your end, we seem to have moved on from 306s a lot and now seem plagued with all sorts which is just as good.

How's the crafter van coping with your abuse, still loving it more than the transits?

Carl

To be honest carl all vans are the same, they all break with the same shit egrs, pumps, etc since i have got it serviced elsewhere and not at vw it does run better . It is the prices vw charge for parts that make it a bad van. I drove a transit the other day and it made me realise what a decent bit of kit the crafter is. I am still killing it though hauling round lOndon every day and 12 runs down to germany have stacked the miles on it. But should be ok for another 12-18 months yet. Question is what do i get next? Merc maybe

dont get a merc, my dad had one, traded it it within a year, says he would never go back.

every sensor in the engine bay had been replaced, power steering pipes, new steering rack, and steering column.

van got re sprayed twice as you could basically watch the rust coming through it rusted that quick.

the list goes on.

35 years in the trade, my dad has driven a fair few vans and the merc sprinter was by far the worste

yup, mercs are crap, same bodyshell as the crafter and much more expensive.

surprised you have so many issues with such a new van, my mate has a W plate transit that's fully loaded with tools all the time and only needed a wheel bearing and a clutch in 18 months.

i have had 5 transits and they do not like stop start multi dropping with 1.5 tonne every day they cannot handle it, flywheels gearboxes engines vacuum pumps starter motors they fail big time, but the work i do seems to kill vans full stop and after owning the crafter for 3 years on reflection it has been he most reliable. only problem really is vw main dealers they are absolutely rubbish in every dept and i would not let them change the batteries in my torch.
price will determine my next van purchase as i can get transits for 5 k less than a crafter the transit will last 3 1/2 years i am hoping the crafter will last 4 1/2 so if i can get a crafter for near transit prices it makes sense to get another one.
i have heard mixed opinions with new sprinters dhl use them through their entire fleet and now royal mail i have just put my mate on to one and he has had no trouble so far. I have driven the new crafter and i don't think the engine is any good as it is so dependant on the turbo so i believe it will break as if you force an engine to work to hard we all know what happens so i am thinking the 2.2 merc maybe a better option for a van that will not last more than 4 /5 years anyway and i would not even consider a iveco and the fiat/citroen/pug ducatos are bags of shit that fall to bits

Sprinters are really decent vans, drive great, and if you don't get the 311 (I think) quick too. My parents company use them, one had near 300,000 miles on it and is still going strong.

Oh, don't hate on mercs for rusting, is a transit better? hahaha

Surely your talking about the older models, the newer sprinters seem awful.

mk6+7 transits aren't as bad as mercs for rust, mk5 sure as hell rotted for fun LOL

the Pug/citroen/fiat vans use the Puma 2.2 diesel from the fwd transit.

Sprinter 903 shape was the best van Mercedes made.Solid and will do 30-50k a year without too much grumble, not a fan of the new shape sprinter's tbh, they are ugly....

Transits are alot cheaper to buy than Merc's but they have plenty problems that you will have to fork out for. So you might as well buy a Sprinter because transits will cost the same amount to buy and run in the long run.

From a Transit ownerWhistle

it would be the 313 if i were to get one, i do know they are made of pig iron but it is the 300,000 miles i like the sound of . at the end of the day when i sell a van at the end of my ownership i seldom get more than 1500-2000 for it due to the mileage they have on them. my 3 year old crafter has no rust on it with 122000 on it so rust will not be an issue and they are the same bodies as sprinter. on the sprinter for me it is just reliability i would need and low running costs . i do wonder if it is imports that rust?

stuwee they are my thoughts completely, it will be interesting to see if ford come out with a new body in the next couple of years as it must be due surely , it has been 6 years since they changed the shape

I would say next year for a new shape Transit.

My transit is OK, apart from the rust.

It's an 03 Ex RAC, When i bought it i had 86k on the clock. The LEX print out was nearly a novel. It has had:
New timing chain, Diesel pump, injectors, new rear diff and new rear leaf springs. The last two are due to it being ex Rac.

The engine in the transit's are there weak point. Chains, pimps, injectors and flywheels. The 2.4 lump are worse than the smaller lumps......

Just inherited a mk6 that has just killed it's second engine. And it has only done 110k!!! Washed piston bores due to spangled pump and injectors.
MK7's are a tad better due to most being common rail but the puma engines's needs a complete re design IMO.

Mk5 Transit 2.5di lumps are reliable and good for 300k as long as they were maintained. Ford took a few steps back in terms of reliability when released the Puma engine.
