Unfortunately, it sounds very much like a bent valve issue...Sad

naaahh, well under if you're careful with costs, a typical HG from me comes in at around £400 min, add a tenner or so per valve plus some more for the machine work to recut the seats, probably £5-600.

Sounds like a tapper for sure and louder than any I have heard before including my own car which needed sorting a while back.

Thing is, if it's a tapper, it would tap all the time, not come and go randomly.
I would try changing for some descent oil and a filter first if the tapping is on and off.

If it taps all the time, then head off is the only way.
Also bear in mind that the engine can go for quite some time before the valve head falls off and mangles your engine so if you plan on keeping the car, then get it done asap.
The value of these cars have gone down a lot so it's a lot of money to put into the car against it's value.

I forked out for it because I have spend a fair bit on the car anyway renewing the suspension and various other parts and I don't consider selling mine any time soon so it was worth while Smile

yeah thats the predicament i'm in as to just selling the car as it is or throwing money at something which is never going to pay me back, compared to the video i took a couple of days ago when there was no tapping it's mad how different the engine sounds,

quite often if i start it up on a morning and leave it to warm up say a couple of minutes it tapps like on the video but after a steady drive to work about 8-10miles it quitens down completeley,

heres the video i took a couple of days ago with no tapping: http://s1052.photobucket.com/albums/s444/wayne-o-mac_123/?action=view&current=002.mp4

surely it cant sound so diffeerent from day to day if it's got a bent valve/valves??

defiantley isnt lack oil it's only been changed in the last few weeks, was just under max before and is right on max now,
looks like its a bent valve then,
i imagine that i would get more money out of breaking it as no one is going to want it for good money sounding like this are they. think i'll run it till it dies and then break the car or find a replacement engine

an engine is gonna be in the region of 300 so u may aswel fix this one, better to spend some dollar on this n make it good than spending less on what pothentially do the same to you like a week after you have fitted it.

The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, its self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks does its own oil change. It's just a pity the management system is so fecking temperamental.

yeah but surley 300/400 hundred for a new engine is half what it'll cost to get the head stripped and re-built and h/g cambelt and pump plus labour on top. . as much as i like the rallye and pugs in general just cant justify spending that kind of cash on a 13year old car with over 100k

Welshpug has offered to do it for u 5-600 all in, not bad in my opinion. U would pay 300. For an engine then labour to fit on top of that then the risk of the engine needing work and so on. Does anyone know if rich supplies rebuilt heads?

thing is it wont be a "new" engine, it'll be an unknown used engine that could well pop its clogs next week.

i really do appreciate the offer,
however you are really far away from me to just pop the car in for the work and it's currently my daily driver and i dont have a second car, ideally it's going to have to wait till i can get some cash together to buy a decentish runaround so i can take the pug off road and decide what to do with it

There have been previous members on here who had tapping from cold which goes once warmed up and IIRC an oil change did the trick.

I changed my oil and filter a few days ago.
Total qurtz 7000 5Ltr = £25, Genuine Peugeot filter and sump washer = around £5

For the sakes of £30 and half hour, I would give that a try before anything else Smile

Jees. I had no idea a tapper was that loud. Guess I was lucky when I was looking, never came across one. That noise sounds similar to when the little ends go.

I think I would justify repairing the engine if I were you, sod what the car's worth, if we all thought like that there wouldn't be many second hand cars on the road...

had it to another garage today that live and breath all things peugeot and they said after 2 of them inspecting it. . definatley 100% hydrolic lifter problem as it's intermittent, they said if it had bent or chipped a valve then it would tap constantley, and not get louder 1 minute and then after a few miles of driving be completley quiet
they just advised a real good engine flush or 2 to get the crap out and some decent oil and not to worry about it at all
so i'm alot happier man than yesterday Wink

Good news then, sort of. Wink

Although hydraulic tappet problems on these are pretty much unheard of, but I suppose anything can fail.
