So there i am bored on Sunday night, here in sunny W!tbank, and think f*ck it i'll go for a drive and burn some company juice. Driving along minding my own business I pull up behind a rather tasty red C63 AMG saloon (about £85,000 here), quad pipes shining away. So busy am I admiring this merc in front of me (i'm buying a W212 E350CDi next), it took me a second to realise there was a E30 BMW sat next to it, revving the balls off the engine and merrily dumping away, shooting petrol vapour plumes from the twin pipes in the process. Attention momentarily turned to the BMW, pondering "This w*nker's not seriously going to have a crack at this merc is he?" I then realise there's a droptop S4 next to him, and the penny dropped - i'd stumbled across W!tbank's street racing circuit completely by accident. Oh this is going to be fun!
I then realised how fast and the furious the whole situation looked as i noticed the huge crowds down the left, middle and right hand sides of the carriageway. The lights went red for the crossway traffic and the dash in my Corsa started to vibrate with the aural pleasure of the V8s getting ready to dance before the merc, BM and Audi all took off like stabbed rats, and had left me well and truly in their collective tyre smoke before my plain furious 1.4 had even crossed the white line.
Incidentally, what was your money on?
Anyone?
Well, i got it wrong - i guessed merc...
The E30! Squirming all over the middle lane it won by a half car length over the merc!
As I figured I stood little chance of wowing the lines of punani standing on the side of the road in hertz's finest I parked up in Pick and Pay's car park and watched instead. There was some very tasty tackle doing the arrow straight half mile or so and back, reaching some fairly tremendous speeds along the way (as you'd expect from that sort of tackle with no holds barred - the Merc sounded GLORIOUS).
In other runs there was a nice mk1 escort dumping away merrily, although I suspect in this neck of the woods it's rotary powered rather than YB powered as it would be at home. Whatever it was in the way it was rapid, but was outshone by a mint little Nissan 1400 Pick-up that was lighting up the tyres in 4th as he came past me.
All in it was a bloody good laugh, with some quality machines and plenty of opportunities to go and stick your paws in people's engine bays! Even more amusingly, when the cops turned up in the middle of the evening, they drove through the car park, presumably collecting a fistful of rands in bribes, then promptly drove up the dual carraigeway, having two racers in VTEC Civics blitz past them at 120dB.
Oh well, that was my sunday night! I know where i'm going this Sunday! gonna see what's in that old Ford!
