Is it a through the wheel arch job to change it?

No mate, jack it up and crawl underneath. You will see the VSS it is situated at the rear of the gearbox and should be covered by what looks like a tin foil bag. Pull the bag up a bit and unclip the plug off it, then its just one bolt to change the sensor. Refit the plug and pull the bag back down again to cover it, job done. Smile

Cool I might have a look if I get a break from work, thanks Stan.

The problem seems to happen less often now, could it be that the car hasn't realised that the engine earth is connected again and is therefor still trying and failing to earth elsewhere? Because it is alot better, just not completely Dunno

You can get relatively easy access to the VSS from the top if take the battery box out. I find this more preferable to crawling around under the car, especially as you'll more than likely get a little gearbox oil seepage when you take the sensor out.

Yes, you can do this. The reason I prefer to do it the way I said is because I can't be bothered to reset the interior clock with the right time after I reconnect the battery. LOL

Put the negative terminal on last. Yes

Once the battery is hooked back up, everything should work as normal, no problems. Smile

well i removed the battery box but couldnt find it so jacked it up crawled underneath and bingo, there it was. once i knew where to look i was able to pick it out from above too. i removed the sender, lost a ridiculous amount of oil and tried to fit the replacement, which wouldnt fit, so after several attempts had to put the old one back in which went in very easily and put everything back together

So you still need to fit the new one then? Unsure

Correct, the replacement one I had wouldnt fit so I couldn't use it. The old one has gone back in and the problem is still there

Why would it not fit? Was it the incorrect part number?

The one that I took out was easy to get in and out, the other stopped 1-2mm short, we pushed pretty hard and it didn't want to go any further, might try again if I get more time again

Did you ever get this sorted??....one of mine has started to develop problems with the speedo not working at random intervals and I was thinking about changing the VSS.

exactly that reason, it was an expensive toy. not because of reliability but because i kept buying new parts for it. i was spending a fortune modifying it so in the end i looked at what i was spending on the '6 and what i could get for that money in another car and bought myself a megane rs250. in the long run its worked out a better financial decision LOL
