Running rich
Boggy revs
Jerks and attempts to cut out at around3-4k revs (usually when warm)
Uses a lot of fuel
Not as much of a punch when I hit the loud pedal.

Lambda sensor? I have a spare one but cant get the current one off.
I drove it for a mile or two with the lambda sensor unplugged and had the same issues.
Could it be a sensor? Dirty/ clogged injectors?
Earthing?

Coolant Temp Sensor (the green one on the thermostat housing) could be goosed. This will give you the symptoms you describe, especially when warm. Yes

It is according to my mechanic mate. Also there are random flatsports/ hesitation in the higher revs (4.5k+ ) and a slight 'Pop' when it goes back to pulling hard.

As above my vote is either CTS or MAP sensor.

Is this the car you have just had the head repaired on? If so I would say its the lambda and it will have been contaminated in coolant when it was stripped.

Carl

He hasn't had it stripped down yet Carl, although I too think the lambda is a very good culprit. Yes

It only starts on 3cylinders and there Is a distinctive smell of petrol from the exhaust. Then clears after a minute or so.
My mechanic said its HG. Lots of steam out the exhaust too.

Sounds quite likely, the fuel would usually be from the non-firing cylinder plus the lambda being confused to feck by the coolant, possibly dead by now which is quite common with hg fails.
