Had a compression test done on the car while trying to rule out a leaky head gasket.

Results were from 165 - 180psi.

I thought this looked okay, but from seeing the results on here it might be a bit low..?

Would these sorts of numbers be achieved if the test was done with the throttle closed, rather than at WOT?

Any help much appreciated

Thumbs up

if they are even then all is good, closed throttle will give lower results.

what other symptoms are you getting?

You are spinning the engine over for the same amount of time each time too yes?
Figures are always a bit dodgy depending on the device used to measure - as WP said its all about getting the same across the board.

A split would show as a lot lower. Mine read something like 180-180-10-10 when it went between cylinders Smile

As the other guys have said, a balance between the cylinders is very important. The readings I think are a little low for a std compression ratio, mine reads about 180psi on the cylinders with an 8:1 ratio.

Right, cheers guys. Doesn't sound like too much to worry about. I can get a bit paranoid about engine health issues, especially when I start convincing myself a low boost kit would be a good idea Big grin

Looks like the head gasket must be okay, I was just wondering if there might be issues with the rings. Wouldn't want all that potential boost to go to waste! Mind you, would bad piston rings give such consistent results? Not sure what method was actually used, as my local garage did it for me.

The symptoms I was worried about were a gradual loss of coolant and occasional reluctance to start.

Over xmas a coil pack failed completely and replacing that seems to have cured the starting problems. Then a bit of poking around showed that the radiator cap appeared to be lifting whenever the engine was running , blowing coolant out of the little overflow pipe, so a new cap has been fitted. Time will tell whether that fixes the water loss. The old cap said 15psi on it and looked completely different to the new one, so fingers crossed.
