Hi, my pall has a 205 gti and he is having some issues trying to get it to start. He has tried the 205 forum and other places but thought Id give him a hand and ask you lot.. (I know this is the 306 gti forum, sorry if this offends anyone)

When you turn the key to the 1st position (as in one click) all the ignition lights come on and the fuel pump starts to whir. When you turn to the 2nd position the starter kicks in continuously (the car does not fire up tho there is no spark at the plugs). Then when you turn to the 3rd position (the one that springs back when you release the key and usually turns the starter) everything goes dead until you let the key springs back to position 2.

He has had the engine out and gave everything a bit of a tidy up, the car ran fine before. Since the fault occurred he has replaced the ignition switch and changed the engine wiring loom.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated..
I'm going out to his this week and would love to be able to fix the fault and get some beer tokens
Razz

Thanks Scott

Possible bad earth conection or the amplifier unit ie the ignition module has gone or faulty spark plugs if you do go to start it make sure you take a fully working ignition module and coil with you and double earth the module otherwise you will blow that to

its unlikely to be a bad earth or ignition amp, sounds like he has has f*cked up the wiring, tell him to put it back how it was LOL

Yea the problem is he has put it back how it was or at least how he thought it was.
I'm assuming the ignition wires go into a plug that just plugs into the ignition switch so they cant be fitted the wrong way around?

I had this when I put a 16v in mine. Turned out I'd connected one of the wires wrong in the brown connector by the steering coloumn, where the loom enters through the bulkhead. Check the smaller of the two. Iirc there's a thick blue wire and that was connected wrong. May help?

If he's connected everything back up to how it was originally I'd start by looking at things he's changed. You say ignition switch? Do you mean the barrel/where you put the key? If so that'd be a logical place to start, try fitting the original part back on.
It does sound like the starter wire and a switched live are the wrong way round or similar though.

The barrels can become fooked over time, but sounds like a wiring problem.

I'd say big fat earth cable from chassis to gearbox is either knackered or dirty contacts on that cable

I had this on my own 205

The starter going on the second notch could possible be down to the loom mixing pre and post 91 looms

They swapped the ignition live an start over

Get a pic of the 9 an 6 pin plugs under the steering coloumn

Probably just needs to swap two cables over

Did you say your mate has changed the loom. When my mate changed his engine this happen.
Turned out the for some reason that on later cars the loom was slightly different. His was a f plate and the new loom was k. We just swaped the to ignition wires over on the barrel and it was fine. This is only what I have seen and been told so please don't attack me if I'm wrong.
