Hello all,
I need to replace my gear box (it broke dues to the torque the engine produces):

my car's OEM drive ratios (1st to 5th):

Ratios: 2.92 - 1.85 - 1.28 - 0.97 - 0.76 | FD is 4.43 (very short ratios)
Kph at 7000 rpm: 60 - 95 - 137 - 181 - 231
Upshift rpms (shift at 6800): 4304 - 4705 - 5148 - 5312
Cruise as 100 Kph: 3028 rpm

I can get a 405 gearbox (same ratios as mine) and put a final drive of 4.18:

Kph at 7000 rpm: 63 - 100 - 145 - 191 - 245
Upshift rpms (shift at 6800): same as OEM
Cruise as 100 Kph: 2857 rpm

I can get a 405 gearbox (same ratios as mine) and put a final drive of 3.59:

Kph at 7000 rpm: 74 - 117 - 169- 223 - 285
Upshift rpms (shift at 6800): same as OEM
Cruise as 100 Kph: 2454 rpm

I have a 205 GTI gear box and i can put a FD of 3.59 on it:

Ratios: 2.92 - 1.85 - 1.36 - 1.07 - 0.97 | FD is 3.59
Kph at 7000 rpm: 74 - 117 - 159 - 202 - 248
Upshift rpms (shift at 6800): 4308 - 4999 - 5350 - 5529
Cruise as 100 Kph: 2821 rpm

What do you think would be the best configuration for a daily driven + sometimes track use turbocharged engine with 350bhp and 45kgms, considering the facts that:
1. I wouldnt normally boost on 5th gear - it should be for cruising only.
2. I already have the 205 gearbox and a FD of 4.18. So i need to get a FD of 3.59 or a 405 gearbox

I think the 4th option is the best, no?
The 405 with FD 3.59 is very long and i can "accidently" go up to 285kph - i am not sure i want my gear box to give me the option of such speeds. Smile

changing the gear ratios will not help against it breaking!

Its not about not breaking gears, but how will the power be transferred to the road and the overall driving experience.
The original ratios with the final drive of 4.43 are very short - and the wheels just spin off in full throttle on 2nd and 3rd.

Stick to a later 5 speed, you can get them strengthened - ask Rich W or Miles about it. I think Ecureil from Brazil has been using ML boxes that take a huge amount more torque (V6/boxer van etc), just getting them to fit is a pain. Sure there is some info on here about it somewhere - he runs a drag ZX with 600+BHp iirc

It is a bit of a faff though (done it attached to a V6) so strengthened BE are probably the way to go.

According to a friend, who is a Peugeot engineer - the older manual gearboxes are much stronger than the newer ones. That is why i am looking for 405 / 205 old BE3 boxes. We have stripped down 3 gearboxes by now and my broken gearbox is the next. Smile
I will use, however, my original gear's synchro hubs.
