tonite went out for a run in the gti6 and after 8 months, at last it let me down (to be fair was expecting it sooner) but when changing from first to second i appear to have snapped either the base of the gearstick or or the selector rods! so looks like its gonna be a wee call to the rac.
Does anyone know is there a common part that fails

The rod will of popped off, it's an easy fix!!
If you look down behind the rhs of the head as looking from the front youwill see 3 small diameter rods going left to right, 2 are about 4" long & one is probably 9" long, one (probably the long one) will of popped off at the rhs, just push it back on & don't burn your arm on the fannymold!!!!

Cool

I would say it sounds like a selecter rod, the rubber bush may have perished. This is easy to spot and easy/cheap to replace. Pop the the bonnet and look towards the back of the gear box where the rods are located.

If it's come off the put it back on this may get you home just be gentle with the gear shifts Thumbs up

Edit. Beaten to it.

by luck i was just leaving the village so let it freewheel home, al get a look in the morning and see what it is, hopefully be able to get it driving again, bit disheartening to see it on the back of a wagon. ive just been looking and theres a couple of posts on links and quickshifts pretty cheap any ideas where i could get a set from and what sort of prices they are and if they are worth buying. May aswell upgrade rather than replace. Are pug1off still doing them?

The rods will pop more easily with a quick shift!!
Best advice would to buy some rosejointed rods from Miles on here so it won't happen ever again!!

Cool

Could well be the shifter stick thats broken. Not unknown - they snap above the balljoint and are fairly easy to replace.
