The past 5 days or so my 6 has been stalling after coming to a complete stop when I press the clutch pedal down all the way and idling like rubbish. I changed the MAP sensor and stepper motor which cured the stalling but the car continued to idle like crap and was always 'hunting' at idle, drove fine in all gears and at all speeds.

Tonight I took the car out for a drive and it died when I stopped at a roundabout. Tried to restart but nothing. RAC guy checked the car over, electrics work, fuel pump is priming, sparks going to coil pack and battery is fine, big red knock sensor(?) is pushed down on the right of the engine bay and there were a few pops and bangs when the engine was being turned over. He tried to do a diagnostics check but his computer could not connect to the ECU. He tried 5-6 times before coming to the conclusion that the ECU is either locked or knackered.

Anyone experienced this before? Any advice?

hairline crack in the plastic resonator (helmholtz resonator) under the inlet manifold? could have caused erratic idling and a big break in it has been the final straw. had this before and new resonator cured it

whip the inlet off and inspect the black box. mine hunted all the time and it wasn't until it wouldn't run atall that i stripped it down. the resonator had been fibre-glassed previously and patched up and it'd split again

if ECU was knackered i doubt you would get all of the other things

£10? allenallen off here gave me one for free LOL they're dead common for breaking when the car spins on trackdays and backfires / runs in reverse Yes

best thing to do is just remove it and check for splits or fractures, it does happen. no point buying expensive bits before you inspect stuff for free

edit>

it goes into that hole that's blanked off inbetween the 2 centre ports. looking at your inlet, you can see it. the black plastic bit poking up. couple of screws underneath and it pings out

In the past few weeks I've had a manifold back longlife exhaust, 57i induction, clutch and engine mounts. It wasn't untill having all that that the symptoms started. There is a bag full of service history with the car so I know it's had LOADS spent on it and has been baby'd throughout it's life.

if the manifold isn't sealed properly against the head it can run like shite and backfire a lot. i would personally [given your other diagnosis above about getting spark/fuel] whip the inlet off and check the plastic resonator, and then either replace it if it's broke, and/or refit the manifold with care if it's fine. i've had issues in the past aswell reseating manifolds cleanly against old gaskets and it idling bad or backfiring if there's a slightly gap. you can even split the manifold mounting casts if you overtighten them. i've seen them broke a few times already but not causing issues though
