mk1 focus rs zetec turbo, with a st170 6 speed box, although manifolds are the wrong way around again so turbo on the front

Ford Duratec! I'm shocked it hasn't been mentioned already. Hugely tunable in NA form and has a shit load of torque to boot. And being all alloy design it'll be lighter too. Perfect for a 306 IMO
