Had new discs and pads on the front very recently which i thought would cure this.

It hasnt, only shakes when on the brakes...say when gradually stopping at a roundabout.

Its not tracking or wheel balance, car drives straight and true at high speeds and only vibrates under braking.

Going to jack the car up now

What should i look at?

-driveshafts?
-discs again?

Thinking of putting the car in gear and using the pads whilst i watch the whole assembly..

Any advice welcome thanks

my friend had a similar problem with his vw corrado. He used the new discs as a leverage point to reopen up the caliper to fit the pads in. Took him a while to admit it was what probably warped the discs. Could this be an issue?

Check the rear calipers and sliders aren't seized, one of mine was and it made for all kinds of weird.

you wont feel so bad about pouring your money away when you see my follies. i could of had a 6grand monster car by now, (and unable to insure it) Razz

does it pull to one side more so when braking?? if so id say thats the side to investigate. sounds like an ever so slightly warped disc to me. not enough to unbalence the wheel etc but enough to notice it when braking

You probably won't be able to tell my looking at it, how sure are you the disks aren't warped? Are they new? Have you tried different ones? New pads? All sliders free all round? Handbrake releasing properly?

I've probably spent around 4K on this car including purchase...it soon adds up.

No doesnt pull to one side either...

It might be warped discs again but i dont see how i can warp them again so easily, ive had new discs to bed in before so i dont think i did anything differently this time

I think for the mileage i do it is really time i just bought a diesel and was done with it.

I cant be under the thing every weekend which is what it feels like its asking of me right now

It costs about £25 for a new pair of front discs, gotta be worth a try rather than throwing away a car and buying a new one surely? New cars have problems too remember.

The front discs and pads are litterally about 1K miles old.

Rear has had new pads in June i think it was of this year.

Rear discs were new at 55k i think, now on 95k.

Handbrake is at the moment, great. For once it wasnt even an advisory on the mot!

I'd try the rear discs then, something like £16 from GSF for the pair of Brembos.

seems funny that rear brakes should effect steering so drastically, but im a noob so ignore that comment if ive overlooked something.

could just be sods law that they sent you a disc with a manufacturing fault in it. bedding in your brakes is kinda like tempering a new sword. you can do it all perfectly but one imperfection in the metal and boom.

the discs have 1k on them? have they always vibrated since? did the vibration change or get worse or better at all between your old brakes and these current new ones.?

Thats the thing, im really not sure if ive warped them.

How easy is it to get someone to check them? Can any garage do it?

As far as i can tell, braking was very smooth when i first installed the new discs, but has come back with a vengence. Its probably around the same intensity, if not a little worse this time.

It sometimes causes the dash to go a bit mental too.

Standard discs and pads really don't need bedding in, there's just no need. It only takes quite a small tolerance for a disc to make a car shake, I doubt a spanner monkey would be able to tell tbh but you could try.

Or for the same money you could just get some new discs and try them.

hm...... your best off trying new discs and being extra carefull when fitting them not to put excess stress on the disc which could lead to warping.

by eye itd be very hard to tell. you have to get the disc fitted to someting that rotates perfectly and then place a fixed pin or similar next to the corner edge of the disc. as it spins (if warped) you should see the distance between the needle and disc increase and decrease. then again if the warpining is minute you may not see anything (even with a magnifying glass)

and i guess a spanner monkey would just fit new discs rather than going through the mad hassle ive explained.

theres also a possibility that if your original discs warped themselves randomly and after 1k new disc have done the same. its a possibility somthing else might be causing them to warp.
sticking brake pots might lead to excess wear/friction/heat and a warped pad.

correct mne owain if im being wrong here again.

ooooooo.........even simpler less accurate way. find a perfectly flat surface and place the disc on it. check to see if the gap all around is the same.

Does it do it on light and hard braking?

The flange face on the hub that the disc sits on probably has a buildup of rust/copperslip/brake dust. This needs scraping or wire brushing off to give a perfectly flat surface for the disc to sit on. If you have'nt got the disc flat it will have a lot of runout causing brake judder.

P.S. The right tool to check for warping/runout is dial gauge.

Thanks but P-bushes done very recently, and balljoints within the last 15K.

Will any garage likely have a dial gauge to check the discs or is this a specialist thing?

If so anyone know anywhere in herts/bucks that could check them for me?

They should have one, its only £15 for a machine mart cheapie though. I'd take the wheels and discs of first though and check the hub faces before you start going mad on garage fees and blind alleys.

Quite. Even if a garage charge you half an hour's labour for checking them, that's already paid for a set of new discs.

Provided you have'nt done hunderds of miles on them even if they were on a bit wonky they shold be fine once you manage to get them to sit correctly.

he mentioned the old disc randomly went warped/wobbly and the new disc started out fine (cured the problem) but has gone the same way after 1k miles. this seems........like a clue

could something else....... be causing the disc to warp? only thing i can think is its a sticky/jammed pot causing excess brake heat?

could something else wayward be warping his discs?

You would normally see some evidence of that, blue overheated/glazed discs or feel the binding when you jack up the car and turn a wheel by hand. I still think it's poor seating.
