Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice.

When travelling along I have a nasty vibration through the steering wheel but only when the engine is under load. This happens at all speeds, if I lift off the throttle the vibation goes.

I thought it was possibly a buckled / imbalanced wheel but I have recently had the wheels refurbed, new tyres fitted and balanced but the vibration is still there and I would ahve thought that the vibration would be apparent whilst coasting as well as when under load if it was wheel related.

Any ideas??

Not sure if this is the correct section Dunno

Cheers Thumbs up

Check the condition of the inner CV joints.

Look for CV grease in the area around the lower engine mount/p-bushes. If the boot is split and the joint dries out you get the vibration under load.

Look for a leaky boot as aboveThumbs up

Hard to tell if a inner joint is knackered when on the carThumbs down

Easier to check outers,go on hard full lock, drive around in a circle and listen for clicking/clunking noises, try both locks/directionsThumbs up

Surely failed bearings would make themselves know when coasting as well???

ANy advice on where to and where not to buy driveshafts from?? GSF have them for £75 a side.

Cheers :thumsbup

If your not sure it is shaft I think I would buy some off someone breaking a car that had none of your issues.

Could spend £150 on two shafts and still have the problem Wink

Stuck a new long shaft on it today and the fault seems to be gone - not been for a decent run yet but certainly no vibration under acceleration.

The intermediate bearing had a bit of play in it so i reckon that could of been the issue.

Time will tell - cheers fot all your help and suggestions Thumbs up

After a long run to Inverness it would appear that the vibration is still there.

Car has had new wishbones and discs on it now as well so rules out warped discs.

Back to square 1 Angry

Any more ideas? Thumbs up

Just read in another post that if the engine mount casing was loose it could cause similair issues so will need to check that.

I did exactly the same as you. mine was SIX contributing factors.
First I did the balancing. No change.
Then I got the lower mount done. Noticeably better but still there.
Then My driveshaft started to shit itself. Wayyyyy better but still there a bit.
Got new tyres noticed it got worse.
Noticed my dash wasnt tightened up properly, Stopped the dash flapping about
Went to a PROPER balancing place and nearly gone EXCEPT under braking. (note: about 0.5kg of unneeded weights were on my car. If wheels are out by 10g then they need balancing. 0.5 IS A LOTTTTTTT)
Changed the disc and ITS GONE wooooooo

Common scenario. Old cars with several worn components all contributing to the problem - still serviceable/MOTable but past their best. Even though fixing one possible cause does not seem to solve it, it is still most likely contributing to the problem, so it's not "wasted money" per se. Also, worn bushes etc put more strain on other components.

In a few months time (having just done the rear axle mounts) I am going to sort the front end of my car - new top mounts, engine/gearbox mounts etc. It is OK now but I get a click noise on and off the throttle in traffic and it could just be a bit tighter.

Check top mount cradle Mik Smile and once these cars are all renewed etc, these cars are tight like a nun.

Thanks, will do. New engine mounts are on the agenda so if it looks knackered a trip to see daveyboy will be in order.

Have driven 1000 miles in the last week - see my at project thread - and noticed a noise from the left front and a vibration coming through the steering wheel but only sometimes. When it happens it sounds a bit like driving over a rumble strip, but not as loud/coarse. It doesn't sound like a wheel bearing and I'm thinking it could be a driveshaft.

When it is not making the noise it feels fantastic - drove back to Brizzle from Folkstone last night and it was a brilliant drive.

loose engine mounts seem a large contributing factor in "tightness" with both my 1.4 and both gtis i have owned.

namely the top engine mount, it always has a gap between it and its surround due to it being a shrunk 16 yearold piece of rubber, each time i have made and fitted a chock. this is a cheap bodge way to fix it. its best to get a new one and ensure the engine is not able to rock back and forth due to excess space.

you man find the surround has actually been bent wider over the cars life, allowing extra space for the mount to rock. this may require a chock still, or some elbowgrease with a block of hardwood and a mallet.

Almost certainly a driveshaft issue, this can be caused by a broken spring in the inner cv joints, this pushes the engine side to side as you accelrate and so shakes your gear nob. If you've done 1 shaft and the lower mount do the other shaft. Oh yeah, makesure you have the correct bottom ball joints, some fools will supply incorrect lengths which will give the wrong level of inner cv plunge.
