I've been thinking about sticking my 6 in a garage (will have to rent one) for a while now, with the intention of "doing it up" over however long it takes... a project to some degree, and also saving a bit of money each month too.

I have never done this so am a bit clueless as to whether it's worth giving it a go or not Dunno

Has anyone done this themselves and could give some guidance?

Can you keep a car in a garage, SORNed and do you need it insured if it's in there?

The TAX is due end of Dec so would like to do something either way before then but it's a very unknown path to me.

If anyone has any advice at all, it would greatly be appreciated, positive or negative with regards to this!

Thank you

Steve

it can be sorned and in the garage, and its up to you though whether or not you insure it or not,as you wont be covered if it gets stolen, or if the garage catches fire

You can get "laid up" insurance policies for cars which are long term off the road, usually for a nominal sum per annum.

£58 to insure my 306 for garage use and accidental damage within it. not anything relating to house insurance

i had mine without mot, tax or even insurance when it wasn't rolling for about 2 years (sorn)

you do NOT save money, infact the oppposite. with it being off the road, things escalate and you end up spending more on it

I took mine off the road for 18 months and he is right about expense . Only took it off the road To prep it for car shows. Restored the underside, under bonnet, rear axle chromed bits sprayed bits and got it looking sweet had engine rebuilt too and then sold the car as it drained my resources like a blood sucking leech. Get shot of it buy a better motor and stop getting sentimental about cars as it costs fortunes and you could probably buy a new car for what you are about to do

Mines been off the road in a garage for nearly 3 years now. I start it up (with the help of a battery jumper) and back it out onto my drive every once in a while, seems fine. Not insured, just SORN.

Really? Sad Thing is, I'm quite handy with the tools, so don't mind having a go myself, and don't mind it taking 18months+ to get sorted!

I think I have been able to find some local garages that sound like a bargain. I worked it out roughly today, and savings on car tax and insurance minus the cost of the garage rental, I'd be saving between £700 and £800 a year! Not to mention the fuel cost savings I would make too! That's without insurance though in the garage, so to get a basic coverage I don't know how much that'll be.

Was that £58 per month Rikky or for the year?

It's not a bad car, but it does need a few things sorted, like suspension, new interior bits, exhaust eventually etc etc. I'm not planning on turning it into a dedicated track car where thousands need to be spent to get it anywhere decent, but the sound of a project does appeal to me! Smile

Thanks for everyone's input. I haven't seen midlife's project yet but will check it out gilesy Thumbs up

For the year, with flux

I bought an M3 and put the 306 in the garage and one thing led to another, and two yrs later i'd spent about 5k on the 306 Doh

Shock Ouch!

I'm with flux atm, so if its around the same amount that's brilliant!

Well having a look at midlife's thread, I can confirm I will NOT be going that far with it LOL

I can see how addictive it could become though, and what a money pit it could turn into...

Hmm

if you don't put it all on a credit card and do it gradually, without rushing, you'll have something decent to show for it and actually learn a bit. i could do stuff but only once i'd garaged my 306 could i get the engine in and out on my own, at one point i got the thing back in including assembling a draper engine crane in 20 minutes and tightened up etc on mounts. that would have taken me a month previously

The car will stay in much better condition in a garage, not getting wet all the time, paint getting assaulted by the elements etc. I keep mine garaged and fix things up etc. I'm about to order a bunch of stuff from BigDug - a workbench, shelving, tool storage, vice etc then the man-cave will be complete.

No, credit cards wont be used No Have never had one, and don't want to start now.

When the Mrs and I were together at our house, I could work on the car just outside the place, had our own space where the car could stay, and if I had to, use her car to get around, although she hated that LOL

Where I am now, there is nowhere to work on it, as I'm on a busy through road and have to park on it. Things just wouldn't get done, but I'm hoping with it in a garage I can take my time, save up for the parts and have a go myself, saving a bit of pocket money at the same time. I'm hoping it'll give me more flexibility; if I can't afford a part, it'll just wait, no worries Smile

Thanks for your comments. If there's anything else I might not be aware of, please fill me in!

Smile

Just to give you some peace of mind when storing, been and fired mine up this weekend after about 9 months stood. First 2 turns of the key it fired up then cut out, third turn and with some throttle it fired up and ran fine. Left running for half hour to warm everything through, then back in garage, battery disconnected and will be left there till after winter now.
