Sounds like a v8 or something! thought exhaust may be blowing at first but now i'm sure it is the engine. fired her up Sat morning when it was light to have a listen and it ran sweet as! Today I thought I ought to run it again to make sure and sure enough 5 miles down the rd, same thng happened! now it sounds lovely, but not right at all? as it is comencing once warmed up could i be looking at head gasket? Dunno

+1

When one of my Coil Packs was on the way out it would cause the EML to come on intermittently, along with a loss of power. Then it would seem to cure itself, like the way you describe.

They are easy enough to check.

With the engine running, unplug each coil pack one at a time. If there is a change in engine sound, then that coil pack is working correctly. If you unplug a coil pack and there is no change in engine sound, then you have found the duff one.

Hopefully some of that made sense! Laugh

I bake a nice cake but coil packs? i had a good look around today i couldn't even work out where the sparkplugs were; i assume they are round the back somewhere god awful to reach! i think i know which are the coil packs but i shall still probably be taking it to the garage! it will be nice if it is an easy fix. there is no mayo in the filler cap and the water smells fine but it's early days! fingers crossed!

Mate, if I can replace them you can Yes

Get an allen key and remove the plastic strip cover thing on the top of the engine, the bit with the oil filler. Under that you'll see the four coil packs, big plastic lumps about 3"x2", with two hex/torx screws holding each one in.

Remove those screws, unclip the wire, pack just comes out. Spark plugs are underneath those, which is why you couldn't find them. Honestly you can't go wrong.

That'll cost you a cake.

ok: i reckon i could manage that, I took a risk and drove it to work this morning and sure enough about 5 miles up the road on came the light and the misfire started again. It seems to cope quite well only running on three but i have nursed it along! will running it do it much harm? i can car share for a day or two but i think i'll change them all spark plugs as well are they expensive?? I'll ring gsf tommoro. Then get my spanners out in the evening!

I don't think it really does any damage running on three cylinders, I've seen enough Top Gear trials where they've driven for days without a full set Wink

My spark plugs were £2.50 each from GSF, Bosch ones I think they were.

well i went to GSF to get a new coil pack to see if i could avoid the garage! £41.00 fooking quid for 1 coil pack jeeeez!
Luckily for me they didn'y have one in stock so i arrange to pick on up from another store today. then went to a mates house for a contemplate ............ Smoke then it dawned on me! some things take a while with me! give thug a ring! i called him up and asked if he had any coil packs kicking about from all those raped cars? he told me he had one in the attic so off i went to have a looksee £10.00 sounds better than £40.00!
Jon is such a nice and useful chap to know! out he came with his tool box and set about fiddling around under the bonnet while i held the torch! strangle i had an intuitive idea which one might have been the duff and sure enough i was right! Alas when changed i fired it up and the miss fire was still present and warning light still on Sad so i took him off for a beer and that was that! he concurred that he must have had a duff too! No Sad
However when i went to drive home .... no warning light no misfire .. problem solved! car ran sweet all the way home it was nice to have the car ALIVE again! gave it some beans; lovely!

erm so i owe you a few more beer tokens jon and a big thanks for being there and being so willing to help out on a damp friday night at very short notice! the car is sorted! my technicasl knowledge base expands even further LOL

That's the joy of these shitty old bangers we own, 90% of the time all you need is a post on here and the local garage and their £80-per-hour labour rates can do one.

Good work matey, now you know how to change plugs, unclip and replace the air filter and pop a new one in, quick oil change and pow, you've serviced your own car and saved yourself a couple of hundred quid a year Thumbs up

I am curious why the warning light stayed on and the misfire didn't go immediatly after the change? we didn't let it run for long just fired it up heard the misfire saw the light and thought oh well lets go for a pint! an hour later it's ok Dunno would that just be something to do with the ecu catching up?

Dunno to be honest, I'm pretty much clueless with these things and just change stuff until it works. It could be that it's the next coilpack along that was dislodged or something and you've knocked it into place, who knows. You can, however, pick up a whole set of packs on here for £25 or so and a set of plugs for a tenner from GSF, so if it becomes a problem again you could always just change the lot.

the missfire still being there on start up with a good plug and coilpack in could be due to a build up of waste fuel in that cylinder as it wouldn't of had a good burn with a faulty pack, just an idea
