well another year and another failed MOT. Getting pretty sick of these now, car failed on a couple of things, was half expecting to see handbrake on there but was greeted with the following:

Nearside front steering system has a road wheel fouling a part of the vehicle (always had a slight rub when on full right lock, nothing that ever bothered me or previous MOT centres, but now seems to be a major issue...)

and emissions, but not because they were bad, but because they couldnt run the test fully because the cooling fans were not 'spinning fast enough' to provide sufficient cooling during the test. The guy had to stop short as he didnt want to over heat the car.

My MOT runs out on tuesday and i need the car for work and havent time at the weekend to sort it (god knows how ill sort the rubbage)

Its partly my fault for leaving it to late as usual but i don't know how much longer i can handle owning this sodding french box! Looking to upgrade to a cupra r but all of a sudden there are no good one available, typical.

for the steering, get the tracking done properly, for the fans, just fix it. job jobbd!

the guy said the rubbing might be because one track rod end is wound in all the way and the other all the way out, sound plausible?

Bet there isn't anything wrong with the fans and the garage have just seen the needle heading past 100 deg and decided to stop.

thats basically what he said, that the guy shit himself and stopped. I'm thinking ill just go back for the free retest, pull the brown fan plug so they are on full speed and thats the best i can do. No idea how to sort the rubbing wheel though Confused

just been out in the car to have a look at where the wheel rubs and its the front of the passenger wheel when on full right lock rubbing against the inside of the arch. Now im wondering whether this could be an incorrect power steering ram as opposed to tracking. Cant believe this has only been picked up on at an MOT now, guarantee i could take it somewhere else and it'd be fine. Shame its £50 a play.

cool, well its going in at 3 for tracking tomorrow and then the emissions test which i will provide fan related supervision for. I had the tracking all properly done at Carls in leicester not long ago so im dubious, however, positive mental attitude and what not.

Track rod ends should be around the same adjustment on both sides, unless something is very very wrong so it sounds like it was adjusted incorrectly as the 205, 309 and 306 TRE are all the same

I literally bought a rallye and took it there to get the cambelt done, didn't notice that there was different size tyres on it.

Neither did he

Carl - a personal comment - when you were smaller you were better. Customer service was better, and the level of numptys working there seemed to be smaller.

End of comments about it, hope you get it sorted

I can't remember this car exactly but when you put the steering in the straight ahead position does it have more lock to the left than the right (count the turns on the steering wheel?


If not it may have the wrong steering ram fitted, most people tend to turn a blind eye on the mot test, looks like yours may be this issue, basically the ram limits the turn to avoid the tyre fouling the inner edge of the tyre.

mine rubs the diff housing ever so slightly on full lock to the right Crazy

was like it when i bought it and the tracking has been recently done.

My Ph1 rubs, I just said to the tester that someone before me has obviously changed the ram and he said ok. Passed it no probs.

this is ridiculous, ive just been out to check and it does rub the diff ever so slightly, does this mean i have the wrong ram? I've sorted the emissions now, I cant fail an MOT just on this surely :|

Carl, i've checked the track rod ends and they are perfectly equal so i dont think its an issue with the tracking at all, it's such a slight foul of the diff, perhaps i should take it somewhere else for a second MOT, risky but might pay off. Anyone know of a 'helpful' MOT place in the south near bournemouth or failing that up near heathrow that could fit me in monday Wink

if your wheel rubs the diff on lock i can confirm you habe a problem. a big one LOL

It'll be rubbing the gear box as they all do if the steering ram has been replaced. Just put your puppy dog eyes on and say it wasn't you and hope he takes pity?
