So, being faced with decent winter tyres being around a 100 sheets per corner, i decided this would be the better option..LOL LOL

Can't say Mrs Evans was too impressed initially! Anyway, it came in part exhange with one of the traders i know, so i picked it up cheap. 2 owners since 1998, Daihatsu history up to 2009, 107k and drives as well as one of these things ever can do. Being the later 2.8 turbo diesel is chuggs away quite happily at normal speeds.

Plan is to do some greenlaning with my mates over the autumn/winter and maybe move it on in the summer next year.

All ive done so far is to machine polish the paintwork, valet the interior, fit some waterproof seat covers and paint the shitty corroded diamond cut alloys gloss black.

Got some Mud terrain tyres coming in 2 weeks and then we're off out to play in the mud.

Still on the lookout for some decent sized spot lamps for the front nudge bar as well if anyone has any??

I think cheap 4x4s are the way forward now we get these artic winters! Thats going to be good fun in the snow. If i didnt do 50 motorway miles a day id be tempted by somthing like this. What kind of MPG does it do in the real world?

winter tyres are the muts on my van , used them for the first time last year and never got stuck once. just had to renew the rears this month and the tread looks even meatier and i will not be bothering changing them in the summer as they are all round variety that look like they will last an age. cant believe i never discovered them sooner they are that good in the shitty weather coming our way this winter

I seriously consider doing this every winter when the weather gets awful, just lacking two things:

a ) Enough space to store it
b ) Enough money to buy the girlfriend enough gifts to forgive me

I like how you've said "Four new tyres? Sod that, better to just buy a new car. Which also needs four new tyres". That is basically me in a box LOL

Even better, so you've swapped a car which *needs* new tyres by buying another where you'd *prefer* new tyres?! How the hell did you get away with that one?!

Getting bored of waiting for the Snow now, so have been greenlaning every sunday for the last 4 weeks LOL!

Got stocked up on the paper OS Landranger maps (cheaper than a electronic OS unit) and have been teaching my Lad how to navigate - he's getting quite good, apart from when he's texting his mates....

Took the camera today and grabbed some pics.

On our own today so had to be careful where we went, its much safer when theres a group, and even better when they have a winch!

It filled a couple of hours this afternoon whilst Mrs Evans and our daughter were xmas shopping.

That looks like more fun than Christmas shopping, fo sho. Possibly stupid question, but how can you tell from a map which roads are offroad enough to be fun whilst still not just private driveways?

The key on an OS map shows you what's a byway and a RUPP. Can drive on them.

Its tricky but as long as you can Map read ok, its not hard. All the BYWAYS in the uk are marked with a red "+-+-+-+-+-+-". As you can see in the first pic, there should be a post with Byway written on, and if theres a TRO (traffic restriction order) on the lane preventing you driving it, it should be posted on the erm post.

Local councils have a rights of way officer who has the definitive map with all the latest TRO's on. You have to have doubly sure NEVER to go down footpaths/bridleways etc etc as thats illegal and a prickish thing to do.

Common sense prevails really, and a lot of BOAT's (byways open to all traffic) are too overgrown to drive down. Legally speaking a BOAT has to have a minimum width of 3m and you are allowed to trim / cut back any thing which encroaches into it.

Time spent pouring over the OS map on the dining room table with a highlighter pen, pays off.

well, no.

RUPP are mostly being converted to restricted byways, although some remain open.

Byways still exist, but some are restricted against "mechanically propelled traffic" and others have temporary orders on them during the wetter months in order to stop them getting churned up.

Unfortunately, the OS maps aren't always upgraded with the information.

You can ring the "rights of way" officer at your local council for information on lanes, and join a local off roading/ 4x4 club who are involved with Glass (Green Lane Association) who can also get you the information.

If you are caught on lanes which aren't open to vehicle traffic you can end up with a Section 59 notice on your vehicle and getting fined for driving "other than on the public highway" or some other such bollox as that.

I do a fair amount in my D3, I love it!

Thumbs up
