The time has come to get a diesel...

I am currently deciding between a mk4 golf GT TDI PD 150 (catchy) or a Leon Cupra TDI (also 150 - exactly same engine as far as I'm aware).

Has anyone driven both? I thought I'd settled on the golf, as I do quite like the shape, but I saw a leon and just thought it made the mk4 golf look a lot older in comparision. I realise they aren't the most modern of cars, but I'm spending between £3-5k and want something relatively nippy!
I've got the impression that I would be to expect the Golf to have a ride aimed more for comfort than sportiness and the Leon the other way round, any opinions?... GO!

Cheers! LOL Thumbs up

Same car esentially but you will get a younger lower mileage Leon for the same money as a golf. Also imo the Leon looks a lot nicer.

there are 3 power outputs from the VAG diesels I think, my brother had the 115 version, I think there is also a 90. Ive heard the 115 + 6 speed gearbox is the most reliable, and can be easily mapped. Im not sure if its the engine or gearbox which is the weakpoint, probably more on Golf/Leon forums. I prefer the look of the Leon, but I there is more rear headroom in the Golf.

Dont get the 150 full stop

150 PD's are known for serious engine/turbo issues

I had the Leon FR 150 which shit itself at 42k miles, ive had the Golf 115 which was a good car but just not punchy enough

Im now driving the Golf GTTDI 130 which has so far been excellent, delivers excellent MPG + decent performance

150 PD lumps are known for turbo issues and the dreaded "Chocolate cam"

Google it !

My turbo oil seals went at 42k, completley out of the blue, shit all its oil and hydrolocked

Failing this it was a decent motor, i just wish i replaced the engine with the Golf 130 unit, id probs still have that leon now

I sourced another 150 engine to the tune of £700(bare block no turbo), had it all fitted and found it was loosing water - Through the head !

Id had enough and flogged it on at a massive loss, went from bad to worse when id bought a "Mint" rallye from someone on here and ended up spending a fortune getting it sorted, but thats a different story

My cupra FR 150 has been faultless. Probably the best all round car i've had. The most important thing is to ensure it is running the correct "special" oil not just any old stuff you have lying about.

I meant the middle one was the best, but didnt realise it was 115/130/150, so yeah, another vote for the 130 lump

Definatly

The oil has to be according to spec, the PD lumps rely heavily on having this "special" oil

What mileage is your cupra on?

You do tuning for a living don't you?

I've heard a few horror stories about people tuning leon tdi's/mk4 golf tdi's, I know an uprated clutch is recommended, would I be looking at a few things to reliably do it and is there anymore risk of f*cking your car up?
I had looked at one of these diesel tuning boxes too... know if they are any good?

Sould have bought mine

I've not had any specific issues with mine in 20k, now on 88k and I've replaced alternator, wheel bearing, brake pads and a rear spring. Run of the mill stuff really.

I've got a 5 paddle ceramic clutch in mine, it's sometimes a little on/off but the remap is great :-)

the 130 tdi is the best of the bunch less lag and for the difference its negligable. problem with the leon is the interior its not on the same playing field as the golf it doesnt look or feel anything like as good. few tidy examples out there this one for example :
