I had a classic a couple of years ago when I used my old moped around uni.
Bacically there is a loophole in the law that states If you passed your driving license whilst in posession of a valid CBT (the very basic, almost unfailable training required to drive a moped on L plates) then you are permitted not only to remove the l plates but carry a pillion passenger provided the moped is restricted to 30mph...
Now the beauty of this is that hardly anyone knows about it and very few qualify as more often than not the cbt has expired.
One night back from uni I had my girlfriend on the back and I'm not sure if any of you have ridden a restricted moped, but they are god awful, only made worse carrying two! I would estimate we were packing around 6-8mph up a particularly large hill when a copper put him lights on behind. I eventually pulled over and was asked to join him in there car, they thought they had an easy conviction once I said I only had a cbt...
They said that court was almost certainly guaranteed along with a large fine.
I said I'm afraid it isn't, your wasting your time as... Loophole described above...
Policemen being as they are, hate being proved wrong and even the folk on the other end of the radio had no clue!
We ended the encounter by me saying I had written confirmation from the dvla and them saying see you in court, no you won't, yes we will, *helmet now on* you won't, we will, *engine started*'laughing
Then he said "and why were you going so slow?"
Needless to say they never got in touch!
