My gearstick moves side to side by about 2 cm in all gears and rattles at a certain rpm which is very annoying.

I've had a search around and found this diagram

The rubber ball (part number 5) seems intact and everything at that end *seems* ok if a bit loose (can't tell what is meant to have movement and what isn't). The noise is definitely coming from under the gearstick but above part numbers 24 as they seem to have no lateral movement in them.

Anyone got any idea what it could be? Does that plastic ball thing on the gearstick break up over time? I'm not that great with tools so I don't want to take the whole thing apart (probably need to take the exhaust off also) until I have the right parts to fix it.

cheers

most likely to be 6+7 worn, f the ball is ok then I'd just change those, might as well ger 24 whilst you have it all apart.

the plastic ball does wear but not sure how much difference a new one will make, you can get an alloy one with a spherical bearing in it, does act as a quickshift depending on how its setup.

Sorry for the delay in replying, wanted to get back under the car first. There's definitely no movement at the gear stick end of the rod, it's all coming from the engine end.

6 + 7 and that whole arm thing seem solid but there is a bit of movement where the rod joins 5. Does it just slide over the ball I take it.

Tbh most of the movement seems to be coming from the linkages themselves. One is solid (top one iirc) but the other two rattle around like buggery. They're the Pug Racing linkages which were fitted by the previous owner and I have a funny feeling they haven't got the clips on them. Has anyone got more any info on these clips and what they do?
