Started stripping an engine today to rebuild... spot whats wrong-

Did you see it?!

Close ups-

Obviously its scrap now, but has anyone ever seen this before? Any ideas what could cause it? Head looks ok, although its had a massive amount skimmed from it. Bought as head gasket failure engine, had a non standard fibre type gasket fitted...

Black hammerite'll sort that. Worked wonders all over my motor Laugh

Did you buy the block or was it one spare? Any cracks between oil/water channels or just the water jackets?

Overheating will be the cause Pete, loss of coolant due to a failed rad or incorrect bleeding after a coolant change is the most likely reason.

Figured it must have been something to do with overheating, just surprising to see it! The pistons look in good nick, valves haven't been touching. The clean spots on the pistons aren't actualy clean, it's like a white residue. I think the white marks may have been caused by coolant on them burning off when running.

What would the symptoms be, if any, when the above happens?, if the cracks are just across the water ways then I'm guessing not as the HG would seal it and there wouldn't be any running issues as such.
