Hey all

My steering creaks through normal use now - lock to lock, has been doing it for a few weeks and just wondered what the symptoms are when the rack/ram needs replacing?

The rack is what sits above the subframe and moves side to side whilst connected to the wheels right for direction? The Ram being what? Is it like a hydraulic mechanism that controls how far the lock can go each side?

Sorry bit clueless about this part of the car. Dunno

Most of the front suspension has been replaced in the last 25k so im not sure it could be anything else.

The black plastic covering that covers (is it the RAM?) has been loose for some time....can that cause anything to dry up?

Also whats the costing/consequences of leaving this or getting it repaired?

Cheers

If it's dead a new rack will be needed. Fit it yourself and it won't be too expensive.

Sounds more like your top mount bearings are away. If you've already replaced them i'd check anyway, I had a set of pattern parts that failed after about 2k!

most common cause of steering creaks would be the top mount bearings, not unheard of for steering column bearings to do so as well though.

impossible to diagnose over the net mind

Cheers, whats the best way of checking the top mount condition?

If by top mount bearings you mean the bit that sits ontop of the spring+strut and screws into the chassis via 3 bolts then yeah they were replaced at 60K mark :s

the bit with the 3 bolts is the mounting, the bearing sits between that and the top spring pan.

you say they were replaced at 60k, but not what its current mileage is.....

jack it up and get an assistant to turn the steering slowl;y from lock to lock feeling+listening for sounds

I hope for your sake it's that, the rack is a biatch to replace Yes

As said far more likely to be the bearings, there's not really anything in the rack that I could imagine creaking. This is what the rack looks like, the top one has the ram fitted and the bottom one does not:

The shaft coming from the top goes to the steering wheel, the ram is a hydraulic device that helps steer the wheels. It's a very basic hydraulic ram and I've never really heard of one going - you'd tend to get play in the wheels (as I did) where something mechanical goes wrong.
