I've got a weird fluttering noises overlaid on top of the induction roar.

There's a sort of hiss/whooshy noise that's always been on top of the engine note, but recently it's had a sort of fluttery stammer at highish revs.

I've only noticed it between 5k and 6k under acceleration but it is quite noticeable. Only heard it in the last few hundred miles, and only at high revs.

Should I be concerned? What could it be?

Doesn't seem to be affecting performance or the 'main' engine note.

Anyone have any experience of this or suggestions? Unsure

Should I be mollycoddling the engine till I pin down what the cause is?

Any help very much appreciated guys Thumbs up

anyone any ideas?

seems to be getting a bit more noticeable even at moderate revs

my old man said he had to replace the exhaust manifold on his 405 Mi16. does this happen much to the 6/rallye?

Only if its on a bit you can see. It could easily be on the underside or covered up by the inlet manifold. Not sure how to check without taking off the inlet which would be a right ball ache if ends up not being that. Although it could well be id imaging. If you get shite replies it might pay to start another thread about checking methods to get the desired response. Smile

Although if there was a crack in the resonator then it would be leaking air resulting in problems wen idleing

If its only a tiny crack would it be noticeable on idle though?

had the inlet off and on again the other day to get at an oil leak, so the gasket it brand new. didn't spot any cracks in the resonator, but wasn't looking for them...

the idle isn't particularly smooth, but i wouldn't call it bad by any means. what sort of idling problems would i get?

i'm working on getting a sound clip of the noise, but i've lost the usb lead for my camera Crazy

cheers for the thoughts so far guys Thumbs up

yeh it might have to come to that, only with my mechanical skills and access to tools, 'nip' isn't the term i'd use for the job!

i'll try and get a sound clip up when i get a new lead

how easy is it to get the resonator off the manifold? i'm assuming you can't get it off with the manifold still on

Nat, you'll have to take on the manifold and then remove it. I suspect there will be just a couple of support screws and that will be it. Smile

Finally managed to get a little video up.

You can hear it clearly around 7 or 8 seconds. The way the file has been compressed actually makes it sound worse that it is, as in reality it doesn't drown out the induction roar, and the car doesn't actually stutter and lose power like it sounds like it does.

Vid here:

Clicky

Anyone recognise this sounds as something they've had before?

Also, what's the danger of a cracked resonator spitting bits into my engine? Shock

That's sounds similar to mine when steel gasket joining the cat to the exhaust manifold started to let go. Cheap fix. Definatly worth a look. Smile

ah, interesting. could be, i can smell exhaust gases from the rear of the engine bay with the bonnet up. maybe should have mentioned that earlier, actually... Wink

is this the sort of thing a beginner can fix, or for the time involved would i be best just getting it booked in someplace?

Right, so Deepak sorted the noise for me earlier on.

Turns out the exhaust was blowing between the manifold and the cat, so the brownie points go to eagle-eared (pretty sure that's the phrase) aaron6!!

Cheers for the help chaps, much appreciated
