Hi guys as I write this I'm sat at a car garage having my tracking done. Anyway last night my car decided that it did not want to start! What happens is when you turn the key it doesn't turn over and when turnin the key the battery light goes out then comes back on when you return the key towards you Crazy

I'm thinking is it actually the starter motor at fault or maybe a dirty earth/neutral terminal to the starter? My thinking behind this is because in my experience when a starter is on it's way out it makes a clicking noise on turning the key but mine literally does nothing.

Any advice would be great because the mechanic here is going to have a look at it and I'm not too clued up on starters and don't fancy being mugged off.

Thanks in advance.

Mine did this earlier in the year and the starter seemed to short out the battery as the clock and radio reset. A new starter sorted it out

Mine had similar issues, turned out the nut which held the wire to the main motor had slackened off causing a poor live connection, bump started fine but was pretty inconvenient since i was at oulton park at the time LOL
Loctited the bugger in place now and its been fine since. Smile

It will indeed. When it decides to not start you turn the key and the battery light goes out. That's what confuses me.

Try giving the starter a sharp tap with a hammer, it may just have stuck. Or put it in gear and rock it back and forth while stationary to loosen starter.

Doesn't the starter come out and attach to the flywheel when turned on so being in gear and rocking it won't touch the starter as it's not attached to the flywheel at that point?

The joys of a sc car. There ain't a manifold in the way so it's p*ss easy. Can imagine it's hard to get at on a normal one.

Spot on, its the solonoid on the side of the starter that reacts to tapping, not the starter itself usually. And no, rocking the car back and forth in gear will have no effect on the starter motor at all as the bendix flies out and engages in the ring gear only when the starter motor is turning under it's own steam and disengages when the key is released (usually Wink )

New starter fitted £30 for a mate to do. Brand new starter £50 pretty well priced I think? Apparently my battery caused the starter to fail Dunno

Have a sinking feeling mine's packing in, went to start it today and it didn't click, just cut out. Ignition off then on again and it worked fine. Weirdness.

Check your battery? When I checked mine the cells were bone dry!! Resulting in a drop of ampage to the starter.
