After a bit of advice on powder coating a set of calipers (renault brembos) please.

Which areas need to be masked off prior to coating?

I know the threaded parts need to be but what about around the pistons? Should the whole interior face be masked off?

Thanks for any advice

personally i would mask all the inside. your pads will rub the coating off anyway and keeps the piston and seals free from contamination.

I had mine done last week, removed all the seals and the guy did a decent enough job of masking up just the right bits.

Went round a couple of bits with some emery cloth afterwards, and you'll need to file down the bits either side of the pad, else the pads won't fit.

Owain I see on your project thread that the insides are fully coated on yours.

Would you recommend just masking the whole of the inside off to save having to file bits down, or is it really not that big of a job? It does look smart having the whole lot done

The problem is once they go onto the oven the seals will most likely get damaged, remove the pistons and seals then mask the inside of the galilee for extra peace of mind!

That's exactly what I did, they won't be able to powder coat them with the pistons and seals in as the rubber would melt.

Remove pistons, remove the outer AND inner seals, they should then be able to mask them up enough. My guy did a decent job of masking up the necessaries, just a bit of work to clean them up.

If you have a Dremel it takes about a minute to clean up the bits where the pads need to go, if you don't then it'd be more of a mission and I'd probably mask it up beforehand.

yes the calipers will be fully stripped and I do own a Dremel!

I didnt realise the powder coaters will mask them up for you, thought I'd need to do all the prep work myself?

They have to do it themselves, normal masking tape would burn. I roughly masked up the areas just to show him, but he removed it all and did it himself with the £30-a-roll stuff.

Ah I see.

I'll go and have a word with them then, I'm sure they will have done calipers before so will no doubt know what to do!

Thanks for the advice chaps

Yeah, the place I went knew the score, well worth a chat first. I just put very roughly bits of masking tape so he knew which bits to avoid, then they mask it up properly for you, generally all part of the service.

In fact as most of the time involved is in the setting up and masking, they did the rear pad carriers for free while they were there. They may also offer you a discount if you're willing to leave them there until they have a batch of work all in the same colour Yes

I masked mine roughly, like *really* roughly. Check the one at the back.

I think I'll do similar to your masking then owain.

Is pressure washing the calipers suitable? I assume so if seals are replaced?

To be honest, there's not much point. I soaked mine in decent degreaser to get rid of as much as possible, but you won't get it all no matter what you do.

Luckily that doesn't matter, as the powder coating place will shotblast them for you anyway as they need them to be completely grease-free. Make sure they only use fine bead though not the big machines, else they'll completely destroy them.

As long as you find a reputable place you'll be fine - as a rough guide the guy who did mine did the cleaning, shotblasting, masking and painting of the front calipers *and* the rear pad holders for £50 all-in, took about a week.

I'd definitely replace the seals, mine were a b*tch to get out and I can't imagine you could guarantee you don't damage them in the process.
