I've just acquired a 205 GTI-6 which seems heavy on the steering to what I'd expected. It's supposed to have a 2.2 rack but I think it's more like a 2.9. I've had the PAS checked to make sure it's working and it seems to be Huh?

The car does run quite a bit of camber on the fronts (2.75 degrees) so could this be making the steering feel heavy?

The reason I ask is that it will affect the LSD choice when I have it fitted shortly (assuming I can get hold of one). LOL

Cheers,

George

Stop being gay, 205's aren't supposed to have power steering.

Well that's exactly what it feels like now mate! It's no bother really but it may make it a handful in tight turns with an LSD making it heavier........

May sound like a silly question but have you checked the steering fluid level?

But also bear in mind that 205's, even with power steering are still on the heavy side. It's just there to help out in carparks.

As said check the fluid.

If it's desperately low top it up and then turn lock to lock a few times to rid of any air. SIMPLES Thumbs up

The most common problem is the UJ failing, This can be the outer or inner ones but the outer where it fit's onto the rack is normally the worst out of the 2.
Next is the Ram, Rack or pump
If the Fluids low you normally feel it getting jerky when turning as would a kinked pipe

The LSD will make no difference in steering weight

Thanks guys, that's excellent information. I can also feel a light knock throught the steering at low speeds which may be another symptom of a worn UJ?

Will get it checked out tomorrow anyway Big grin

Well the steering UJ is to be replaced as there is wear in the joint. Power steering fluid was ok so I hope for some lighter steering next week when I get it fitted ;-)
