Rattle number 1:
Had a knock or rattle from the front of the car ever since i bought it. Originating from the drivers side wheel area.

During my ownership it has had the following up front-

-New Eibach springs
-New Bilstein B4 dampners
-New topmounts
-New droplinks
-New ball joints
-New track rod ends

Just before i bought it, it supposedly had new wishbones too.

This knock makes itselt apparant when at low speed over uneven ground and is a rattle like wheel bolts being loose.
Its p*ssing me off a treat as its never been right.

Everytime ive had the car in the air taking pressure off the struts (whilst having parts fitted) and gotten it back it drives without this knock and i think 'yay its fixed it', only for it to come back again and again!!!!!!!! Angry

Any ideas on that one?

Rattle number 2:

This one has only made itself apparant in the last week or two. It feels to me like when i am coming in fast to a roundabout and break strongly that two pieces of metal (a joint maybe) is pulling apart and slapping back together again. You can feel this through the pedals and feels connected to the suspension somehow. It also makes this knock/feel when i am hammering it from 1st to 2nd and upto 3rd. Generally under excessive torque.

In the last month or so ive had replaced at carls
-wishbone p bushes

Which were f*cked and i had hoped that that would sort knock number 1. But as before the knock has come back almost the next day after having these fitted.

I have thought engine mounts for knock number two and have done that whole 'keep handbrake on and engage gear slightly and rev engine' to check for excessive movement. The engine moves but not a huge amount. Mounts look intact but ive not looked extensively at them.

I have also been under the car on both sides under the wheels and tightened every bolt and nut i can find. Again no improvement....

Im most concerned about the number 2 knock as it really feels like something dangerous is going on.

Any ideas welcomed? Really losing the will to keep throwing cash at this thing....i just wana drive a smooth and tight front end - like it should be its had almost everything replaced! Dry

Sorry for the essay but has anyone any suggestions?

Edit; its also had passenger side driveshaft replaced with a HDI driveshaft as the original had a split in the cv gaiter. This seems fine and abs works no problem.

Engine mount dude. Remember a small movement for something that isn't meant to move much means it is at its limits. And you aren't putting in all the forces from actually moving

now you have tight front end suspension you might be driving a little faster than before without realising and pushing the rear out more on the passive flexible rear mount.

I would check
wheel bearing?
single snapped ARB bush bolt?
rear rubber mounts
rear ARB end plate bolt is tight.
sticky brake slider pins.

Ive had a wrestle with the brake disc assembly and they dont move so i think it can rule out wheel bearing. It is odd rattle number 1 is just on the drivers side though.

Assuming the ARB is the bit that connects to the bottom of the droplink? they both look fine also Sad

yes ... follow it back into the car to where the ARB is bolt into the subframe. sometimes a single ARB bolt can snap.

over tightened drop links. they have quite a low torque on them.

I would spin the hub to check the wheel bearing. sometimes they do not move at all but you can feel the bearings grinding.

Thanks will give those a check tomorrow.
Droplinks are tight.

How do you mean spin the hub? Ive rotated the disc/driveshaft if thats what you mean. No noises there

Daft as it sounds, have you checked the ball joint heat shields (assuming they are still fitted?). Mine rattled like a bas**rd till i "tweaked" them to hold them firm. Mine would make a noise like the pads were loose in the calipers it was that bad.

Thanks so far guys....

As said in my first post last week i had time to jack the drivers side up and tightened every nut and bolt and on Saturday i got the time to do the same on the passenger side - oddly enough the car feels much better.

The strange lurching (rattle 2) doesnt seem to have happened again yet and i took it on a 25mile round trip to my dads yesterday.

Touch wood its sorted but i wont hold my breath. Going to London in a bit so it might make itself known again!

Matt - dont think ive got ball joint heat shields - just the ball joint attached to the wishbone as normal

Thanks for responses so far Smile
