Having a problem with my gear selection. Sad

The car is running a 3 year old valeo pressure plate that has done minimal milage.

The car was working fine all morning and then i suddenly started to struggle to get 1st and 2nd gear. I then found i could not get reverse without it grinding and crunching something cronic.
Removed the GE quickshift.

Then i found 1st was still hard and i couldnt get 5th 6th or reverse.

However 3rd and 4th work fine. Crazy

Two questions

Does this sound like a clutch issue?

Or a linkage issue?

Sounds like the clutch is'nt fully disengaging, silly question but you have'nt got a thick floormat under the pedal or anything like that have you?

What happens if you turn the car off and then try getting it in and out of 1st and reverse?

I can get it in reverse when the car is switched off. 1st is ok when the car is off, both require a little more force than a normal gearbox though. Not sure about 5th/6th to be honest.

Revived thread.

In short it was the pressure plate rivet.

Now i have a massive issue getting the gearbox back on. Tried it once and f*cked the release bearing, so bye bye brand new clutch and hello another...

i have done a search and read wellys extensive guide, but didnt understand what he meant by this bit:

"Use the same method when putting the box back on, lift the rear up on to a axle stand, and jack the front up and slide forward..

Again watch the rad and aircon pipes..."

I dont fully understand what he means. I cant drop the engine enough (solid mounts) so is it best to take out the gearbox mount pin? if so where do i get the tool to do this?

Matt

Where are you having problems putting it back in ?

I find you have to put them in diff first then rotate it into place ?

everywhere! lol

Ok will try that, the last time we put it in we f*cked the bearing because i think we hung the whole gearbox on it. How can i avoid this?

Also what tool do i need to take out the pin?

Firstly, remove the mount pole from the top of the gearbox, remove the speedo housing from the side of the diff and lower the engine a tiny bit.

You need to line it up, then get someone to hold it from above, then get on your back over the passenger side of the car and lift/push the box on from underneath, a wiggle is also required. Tell the person up the top that you'll do the moving bit, they just support it.

Its difficult to explain just a real pain in the arse ! You must have the clutch arm off yeah ?

You need to slide the box in diff first the rotate as I have said someone needs to support from above while you line it all up - it will be a massive pain to get it to locate properly through the clutch and you need to make sure the bearing is at the correct position along with the fork in the box so it slips behind the bearing when you get the box on.

It may take a while to sort and need a few of you - prepare for a shit load of pain and suffering Unsure

Not sure what you mean by gear box pin ???????

Do you mean the gearbox mounting shaft ? ie the bit that goes through the rubber mount at the top of the box ? If so some big feck off mole grips or a modified long socket ?

Remove the rear engine mount and allow the engine to come down lower as well obviously you will need to support the engine with a trolley jack before the engine mount is removed Wink
